    • Catalytic material is provided by a composition comprising the elements vanadium, non-water-contained hydrogen, phosphorus and non-water-contained oxygen. The VHPO elements are present in a relatively fixed atomic ratio range, there being more non-water-contained oxygen present than phosphorus by an atomic ratio of greater than five to one. The catalytic material comprises an anhydrous primary component having vanadium of mixed valence, hydrogen, phosphorus and oxygen in an empirical relationship defined by VH.sub.x PO.sub.y, wherein "x" has an average value in a range from about 1.29 to about 1.40, and "y" has an average value in a range from about 5.46 to about 5.55. The anhydrous VHPO catalytic material may also be described by a structural formula (VO).sub.m (VO.sub.2).sub.n H.sub.2n (PO.sub.4).sub.n (P.sub.2 O.sub.7).sub.m/2, wherein m+n=3, "m" has an average value in a range from about 0.90 to about 1.07, and "n" has an average value in a range from about 1.93 to about 2.10. The primary component is mostly amorphous and in its substantially anhydrous form is characterized by a powder X-ray diffraction pattern having broad peaks with CuK.alpha. d-spacings of 4.30, 4.17 and 3.09 A. The catalytic material is prepared by a process comprising the steps of reducing vanadium pentoxide with a reducing agent in an aqueous solution of phosphoric acid, followed by the step of oxidizing a portion of the vanadium species with an oxidizing agent to form a slurry of a precipitate containing vanadium(IV) and vanadium(V) in contact with a water solution containing vanadium(IV).

    • A projectable device for aligning rail mounted equipment with track side structures, and, in particular, for aligning a coke oven door extractor, pusher ram, or jamb cleaner with a coke oven door. In one embodiment, a rod having an attached terminal fork is extended horizontally toward the door so as to indicate alignment when an attached aligning plate is engaged by the fork. The rod projects from a piston and cylinder combination, and it is automatically withdrawn if alignment is correct. In a second embodiment, an arm having an attached terminal fork is swung downwardly in a vertical arc to engage the aligning plate and thereafter automatically returned to its initial, vertical position, if alignment is correct.

    • Enclosure and exhaust apparatus is provided to enhance control and removal of coke-side emissions during a push in the operation of a coke oven battery. The gaseous and entrained particulate emissions are initially confined to a first longitudinally extending containment zone where the emissions are directed, under the influence of its gaseous thermal drive, upwardly and laterally outwardly away from the coke-side face of the battery. The emissions are then transferred, at the peak of the first containment zone, laterally, through a gas expansion throat, into a second longitudinally extending containment zone that is adjacent and parallel to the first containment zone. Contemporaneously with entering the second containment zone, a portion of the emissions is removed therefrom through an exhaust conduit located at the upper reaches or peak portion of the second containment zone. The remainder of the gaseous emissions, not immediately removed, are permitted to expand longitudinally and transversely within the second containment zone while carrying with it entrained particulates that also have not been removed through the exhaust system. Finally, the retained remainder of the gaseous emissions in the second containment zone are removed through the exhaust conduit while permitting those particulates that are heavy enough, to fall, by gravity, to a sloped bottom of the second containment zone and, thence, to be discharged to ground at a convenient collection area.

    • Articles and a method are disclosed useful for providing a lift insert for a cast concrete product, such as a cast concrete slab or panel. The articles include a threadless plug for temporary insertion into an insert for receiving a lifting device in a cast concrete product, an insertion tool therefor, and the insert assembly. The threadless plug is characterized by an elastomeric tubular member having closure and/or abutment means on each end and dimensioned such that, in its operative position in the lift insert, such as a coil insert, the portion of the tubular member between the ends is placed in tension to positively seal against ingress of concrete into the top of the coil or insert and between the void plug and the coil during casting. The tool and method involve laterally inserting a flattened and then folded lower portion of the threadless tubular plug into a tubular tool member, longitudinally inserting the plug and tool member into the top of a cylindrical lift insert, longitudinally stretching the plug by frictional engagement with the tubular tool member and contemporaneous engagement of the upper abutment means with the lift insert, while withdrawing the tool member from the insert, and compressively affixing the lower abutment means in overlying intimate contact with the lower end of the insert upon total withdrawal so as to place the intermediate portion of the plug between the abutment means in tension.

    • In a coke oven coke side door machine, a bottom tray is mounted to collect spillage that results from the removal of coke oven doors as well as the residue buildup that is scraped from the door seals and bottom plugs during the door cleaning operation. Trays, in the form of inclined planes, are extended from the door machine to catch the coke spillage from the oven and to catch the residue buildup which is scraped from the door jambs during the jamb cleaning operations. This material gravitates down the trays into the catch pan. A scraper then pushes the material accumulated in the catch pan to one end of that catch pan where a conveyor carries it to a dump bucket. The dump bucket can be dumped when the door machine is positioned adjacent a quench car. All of the above apparatus is mounted onto and within the confines of the door machine.
