    • The present invention is the playback apparatus 400 for (i) mounting thereon the BD-ROM 200 in which a plurality of data groups and an application program that refers to each of the data groups are stored and (ii) playing back each of the data groups by executing the application program. The playback apparatus 400 comprises: the playback processing unit 412 operable to control the execution of the application program; the network IF unit 419 operable to obtain, from an external server including therein one or more alternative data groups, an alternative data group to replace part of the data groups; and the HDD unit 418 that stores therein correspondence information showing a correspondence between a storage location where on an internal recording medium the alternative data group is stored and a storage location where on the external recording medium the part of the data groups to be replaced. Here, at a time when the application program in execution reads a data group being referred to, the playback processing unit 412 (i) judges based on the correspondence information whether an alternative data group for replacing the data group being referred to exists on the internal recording medium, and (ii) specifies, as a data retrieve destination, a storage location of the alternative data group indicated by the correspondence information when the judgment is affirmative.

    • A disk drive with the ability to detect errors caused by thermal asperities and assign alternate sectors is described. One of a plurality of error recovery procedures is executed after turning off a signal filter which normally removes a set of low frequencies from the output signal from the head. The unfiltered signal is used to judge whether a thermal asperity caused the error. If it is determined that a thermal asperity caused the error, the sector is marked as defective and an alternate sector is assigned even if other error recovery procedures are able to read the sector. The reliability of the drive is enhanced by removal of sectors from use which have temporarily recoverable errors caused by thermal asperities.

    • An energy saving support device supports energy saving of an air conditioner and includes an acquiring unit, a first energy calculating unit, a second energy calculating unit, an information generating unit and a reporting unit. The acquiring unit acquires operating data regarding the air conditioner. The first energy calculating unit determines a total consumed energy or a standard consumed energy of the air conditioner as a comparison target energy based on the operating data acquired by the acquiring unit. The second energy calculating unit determines a low-COP consumed energy based on the operating data acquired by the acquiring unit. The information generating unit generates room-for-energy-saving information in order to determine a potential for energy saving based on the comparison target energy and the low-COP consumed energy. The reporting unit reports the room-for-energy-saving information.

    • A load processing balance setting apparatus includes first and second air-conditioners for targeted first and second areas, a calculating unit, a determining unit and an adjusting unit. The first area is included within the second area. The calculating unit calculates a sum of an air-conditioning load for the first and second air-conditioners. Preferably, the determining unit determines a first and second processing throughputs for the first and second air-conditioners so that a COP (Coefficient of Performance) for the sum of the air-conditioning loads calculated by the calculating unit is maximized or is equal to or greater than a predetermined level, or so that a power consumption level for the sum of the air-conditioning loads calculated by the calculating unit is minimized or is equal to or less than a predetermined level. The adjusting unit controls the first and second air-conditioners based on the first and second processing throughputs.
