    • A coupler assembly for an optical backplane system having a backplane and two or more circuit packs connected to that backplane. Each circuit pack has an optical transceiver and the backplane has an optical pipe (e.g., an array of waveguides) adapted to guide optical signals between the transceivers of different circuit packs. A coupler assembly is provided for each transceiver to couple light between that transceiver and the optical pipe. Advantageously, the coupler assembly has a movable optical element that can accommodate possible misalignment between the backplane and the circuit pack. In one embodiment, the movable optical element is an array of MEMS mirrors, each mirror adapted to direct light between an optical transmitter or receiver and the corresponding waveguide of the optical pipe. In another embodiment, the movable optical element is an array of flexible optical fibers, each coupled between an optical transmitter or receiver and the corresponding waveguide of the optical pipe and having an angled surface adapted to couple light between said fiber and waveguide.

    • An optical switch has an array of fibers, an optional lens, and a mirror with two-dimensional tilt adjustment. Light from the array passes through the lens, is reflected by the mirror, and passes again through the lens back towards the array. The input/output fibers are arranged in a two-dimensional pattern designed to avoid undesirable crosstalk between fibers. The pattern may include a plurality of fibers positioned around a central fiber in a circular arrangement. For a 1×8 or 8×1 switch, nine fibers are preferably positioned in a circle around the central fiber, thereby providing geometry that substantially avoids undesirable crosstalk between fibers in the array. In another implementation, the fiber array is implemented using a tapered ferrule housing a central fiber, surrounded by an intermediate layer of six fibers, surrounded by an outer layer of twelve fibers.

    • A system for dual thresholding digital barcode processing. A light reflected from a barcode is captured by a photodetector to produce a photocurrent. The photocurrent is converted to a voltage, amplified and filtered to produce a photovoltage. The photovoltage is differentiated to form a first derivative signal and the first derivative signal is converted to a digital first derivative signal and processed to identify logic transitions represented by the barcode. The processing system subjects the photosignal to Gaussian filtering and differentiates the digital first derivative signal to form a second derivative signal. The digital first derivative signal is compared against a positive and a negative threshold and the second derivative signal is examined to detect zero crossings. When a positive peak of the first derivative exceeds the positive threshold and the second derivative undergoes a negative zero crossing within a predetermined time before or after the positive peak exceeds the positive threshold, a negative logic transition is identified. When a negative peak of the first derivative exceeds the negative threshold and the second derivative undergoes a positive zero crossing within a predetermined time before or after the first derivative exceeds the negative threshold, a positive logic transition is identified.

    • A system for synchronization of the angular position of a rotating optical assembly in a bar code scanner having a rotating optical assembly. The optical assembly is rotated by a motor which produces a fixed number of pulses per rotation, the pulses occurring at equal intervals such that each pulse indicates a degree of angular rotation of the motor. The pulses are continuously monitored and counted. Timing is simultaneously monitored. A synchronization label is placed in the scanner such that light directed through the rotating optical assembly will strike the synchronization label and be reflected back to the rotating optical assembly when the rotating optical assembly is at a particular angular position, thus establishing an initial angular position of the rotating optical assembly. Once the initial angular position is established, timing is continuously monitored and pulses are continuously monitored and counted. When an event of interest, such as bar code scan occurs, the pulse count is evaluated and processed to determine an angular position of the rotating optical assembly with respect to the initial position as established at synchronization.

    • A backup method for a multiple source optical scanner which alerts an operator when one of the sources has failed. A controller monitors the operation of each source and flags the failed sources. In the case of a scanner having dual full-time channels, the controller removes power from the failed source and disregards the signal from the failed source. In the case of a scanner having non-simultaneously operating sources, the controller switches the remaining source of the scanner to full-time operation. If both sources have failed, power to the failed sources is turned off.

    • A multiple source optical scanner which employs a plurality of scanning light sources to increase the total depth of field and the density of the overall scan pattern. In a first embodiment, the lasers are of different wavelengths and all on. Their individual depths of field are oriented end-to-end or in overlapping fashion. In a second embodiment, the lasers are of the same wavelength and are activated individually in sequence. Both embodiments employ collimating and focusing optics to produce scanning beams, collecting optics to collect light reflected from an article having a bar code label, and processing circuitry for generating signals having information about the articles based upon the intensities of the reflected light. The first embodiment additionally employs filter optics to separate the individual wavelengths of reflected light. Each wavelength of reflected light is processed through its own channel within the processing circuitry. The second embodiment employs modulation and control circuitry to turn each source on and off. A single channel is used for decoding.

    • A method for decreasing nitrogen oxides of a pulverized coal boiler using burners (2) of internal combustion type comprising: designing or changing all or part of burners of the pulverized coal boiler as internal combustion type burners (2), in which the ignition sources may be plasma generators (1) or ignition devices such as small oil guns etc., and the power thereof can be adjusted for controlling the ignition intensity in the burners (2). The burners (2) are interiorly divided into several stage combustion chambers (5) and are provided with pulverized coal concentrators (4) which do deep fuel staging in the burners (2). During the operation of the boiler, the ignition sources always keep in a working state, and the pulverized coal in the burners (2) is ignited stage by stage and is burnt in advance; decreasing the secondary air amount in the primary combustion zone (22) so that the primary combustion zone (22) is in a relatively strong reducing atmosphere and a high temperature and oxygen-deficient condition for inhibiting the generation of NOx is created; and supplying the remaining air from the upper of furnace of the boiler in the form of over-fire air, so that a deep air staging is carried out in the total furnace. Thus, the NOx generation of combustion can be effectively controlled on the premise of not decreasing the boiler efficiency.
