    • A system and method for user interface mirroring are provided. User interface objects are defined according to an object hierarchy that defines a logical relationship between a root element and one or more child elements. Additionally, the root element includes a directional property that is inherited by the child elements. A layout manager obtains the logical relationship and the specified directional property and correlates a set of physical coordinates for each display object according to the directional property, while maintaining the logical relationship. A renderer renders each of the display objects according to the specified directional property, while maintaining a truth table for graphical resources that could be rendered in one or more directions.

    • A system and method for customizing a composite toolbar via direct on-screen manipulation by resizing the composite toolbar and by rearranging sections within a composite toolbar. A composite toolbar is displayed in an initial configuration state having a resizing area and a plurality of sections displayed on a number n rows. When the resizing area has been dragged in a first direction, the size of the composite toolbar is increased by changing to a larger configuration state having n+1 rows. When the resizing area has been dragged in a second direction, the size of the composite toolbar is decreased by changing to a smaller configuration state having n-1 rows. In another aspect of the present invention, when the one of the sections has been dragged in a first direction, the dragged section is expanded so that it overlaps an adjacent section. When one of the sections has been dragged in a second direction, the dragged section is collapsed so that it reveals an adjacent section.

    • A user interface is described that temporarily displays portions of a page that reside outside of the viewable area of the screen. An animated transition creates a brief preview of at least one user interface feature. Additionally, the user interface feature is then animated out of the viewable area in a way to suggest a location of the feature. In one embodiment, a target page that is being opened controls the transition and animates features into and out of the viewable area to create the temporary preview. In another embodiment, the target page includes user interface elements that can asynchronously control the preview animation independent from the main content of the target page. In yet another embodiment, a transition coordinator can coordinate the timing between animating out a foreground application while animating in a target application.

A navigator portion of one or more layout managers are responsible for the tasks of processing the directional navigation input to identify the next nearest component that can take input focus in response to the user generated directional navigation input. Multiple layout managers are called upon to identify the next nearest component that can take input focus if the magnitude of a requested input focus change is beyond the scope of the set of components to which any one layout manager has responsibility.

Ensuring or maximizing component visibility includes establishing bi-directional communications between a parent component and a child component, and enabling a parent component to respond to an ensure visible request from a child component when an ensure visible request is received by the parent. A parent component response to an ensure visible request includes, maximizing visibility of an identified geometry by scrolling and/or clipping, translating the origin coordinates of the identified geometry with respect to the next higher parent, and propagating the ensure visible request up the component family hierarchy to the next higher parent component if one exists.
