    • A knock suppression control apparatus for an internal combustion engine which can avoid erroneous knock detection and hence the erroneous knock suppression control, to thereby ensure knock suppression control with high reliability. The knock suppression control apparatus includes an ion current detecting means (10) for detecting an ion current (i) flowing by way of a spark plug (8) upon combustion of an air-fuel mixture charged in the cylinder, a filter means (14A) for extracting a knock signal (Kj) from an output signal (Ei) of the ion current detecting means (10), a knock decision means (23) for deciding occurrence of a knock event in the engine on the basis of the knock signal (Kj), a control quantity correcting means (24) for correcting a control quantity for the internal combustion engine so as to suppress the knock event on the basis of result (H) of decision made by the knock decision means (23), an integrating means (16, 16A) for arithmetically determining an integral value (Km; Em) which corresponds to an output level of the ion current (Ei), a comparison level setting means (26, 26A) for setting a predetermined comparison reference level (MR) for the integral value (Km; Em), and a correcting quantity arithmetic means (25, 25A) for outputting a correcting signal (M1; M2) for correcting parameters relevant to the knock decision means (23) or alternatively relevant to the control quantity correcting means (24) on the basis of result of the comparison between the integral value (Km; Em) and the comparison reference level (MR).

    • A misfire detecting apparatus for an internal combustion engine detects only an ion current due to combustion of an air/fuel mixture regardless of a leakage current when combustion: takes place normally. The apparatus includes circuitry for detecting an ion current generated within the engine cylinder immediately after combustion, circuitry 21, 24, 26 for detecting a leakage current occurring between electrodes of a spark plug 14, a first waveform shaper 18 for shaping the ion current into a pulse signal indicating a combustion or misfire event by comparing the pulse signal with a first threshold value for deciding the ion current, the first threshold value being set on the basis of a level of the ion current upon rising thereof, the ion current being superposed on the leakage current, a second waveform shaper 20 for shaping the ion current as detected into a pulse signal through comparison with a second fixed threshold value which is fixed at a value smaller than the first threshold value, and a selector 22 for selectively outputting as the combustion pulse signal either a shaped pulse signal outputted from the first waveform shaper 18 upon detection of occurrence of the leakage current or a shaped pulse signal outputted from the second waveform shaper 20 when no leakage current is detected.

    • A combustion state detecting apparatus for an internal combustion engine is imparted with facility for determining discriminatively the causes for non-occurrence of combustion. The apparatus includes a spark plug (4) for generating a spark discharge upon application of a high voltage generated by an ignition coil (1) in response to an ignition signal (X1) to thereby fire an air-fuel mixture within a cylinder of the internal combustion engine, an ion current detecting means (6A) for detecting as ion current detection signals (X2a; X2) an ion current corresponding to an amount of ions produced within the cylinder immediately after combustion of the air-fuel mixture, a signal detecting means (7A; 7B; 9) for comparing the ion current detection signal (X2a) outputted from the ion current detecting means (6A) with a first reference voltage (Vth1) to thereby output a first decision signal (X3) while comparing the ion current detection signal (X2) with a second reference voltage (Vth2) to thereby output a second decision signal (X4) while invalidating output of the second decision signal (X4) during a predetermine time period from a time point at which the comparison of the ion current detection signal (X2) with the second reference voltage (Vth2) is started, and an estimating logic unit (9, 10; 112) for estimating a cause for nongeneration of a combustion signal on the basis of output statuses of the first decision signal (X3) and the second decision signal (X4).

    • An ignition apparatus for an internal combustion engine is capable of avoiding mis-ignition even if subject to external disturbances when a fail signal is transmitted through a common signal line on which an ignition signal can also be transmitted. An igniter is connected to receive the ignition signal from an ECU, and includes a waveform shaper connected with the signal line and having an input connected in parallel to an input resistance so as to make a voltage at the input higher than a prescribed voltage when the ignition signal flows into the input resistance, and a pulse output circuit connected to the input and having an output for generating the fail signal into which a secondary coil current is converted. The pulse output circuit adjusts a fail signal current such that the voltage at the input when the fail signal flows into the input resistance becomes less than the prescribed voltage.

The engine control unit performs a peak hold of the number of knock pulses to calculate the knock judgement threshold value (BGL) by multiplying the number of pulses by (&agr;). Thus, precision in knock judgement is improved by performing knock judgement based on a maximum value (MAX) of the number of knock pulses (npn).

The stopper (21) prevents the insulator (11), which has not yet been thermally cured, from flowing between the core (6) and the primary bobbin (12) when it is charged into the case (5).
