    • Compounds that are modified polysaccharides having pendant aldehyde functionalities are disclosed. Each of the aldehyde functionalities is attached through a linker to a position corresponding to a hydrogen atom of a different hydroxyl group of unmodified polysaccharide. Also disclosed is a method for introducing an amine-reactive functionality into a dextran. The method comprises (a) reacting the dextran with an alkylating agent having a functionality that reacts with an hydroxyl group of the dextran thereby forming an alkylated dextran wherein the alkylating agent has an olefin group and (b) treating the alkylated dextran to convert the olefin group to an amine-reactive functionality. A polysaccharide can be conjugated to a biomolecule by carrying out the above method and reacting the amine-reactive functionality with an amine functionality on the biomolecule to produce polysaccharide conjugated to the biomolecule.

    • A system (10) and method (50) of dynamic allocation of spectrum for a communication device involves receiving (51) a user channel map (UCM) on a control channel that is outside the band of interest. The UCM can include at least boundary location information for one or more channel resources. The method can determine (52) at least an approximate location for the communication device, compare (56) the approximate location with the boundary location information, and determine (57) which channels can avoid co-channel and adjacent channel interference with licensed users and other unlicensed users based on the comparison. The method can relax communication parameters for the one or more channel resources if no licensed user signals are found in the user channel map, and tightening the communication parameters if co-channel, adjacent channel, or other interference generating channel use is found within the user channel map.

    • A base station selectively communicates with terminals using first and second separately allocated frequency bands, e.g., separate cellular/PCS bands, of a government spectrum allocation based on propagation conditions between the base station and the terminals. The base station may transmit in the first frequency band and receive in the second frequency band during a first time slot and transmit in the second frequency band and receive in the first frequency band during a second time slot. The base station may transmit to a terminal in the first frequency band while receiving from the terminal in the second frequency band during the first time slot and may transmit to the first terminal in the second frequency band while receiving from the first terminal in the first frequency band during the second time slot.
