    • An apparatus for manipulating a surgical needle is disclosed, comprising a body portion, a first needle receiving jaw mounted for movement on a distal end of the body portion and having a first needle engaging member, a second needle receiving jaw mounted for movement on the distal end of the body portion and having a second needle engaging member, the second needle engaging member being operatively interconnected to the first needle engaging member for relative reciprocal movement therewith, wherein each of the first and second needle receiving jaws has a recess for receipt of a portion of a surgical needle therein. The first and second needle engaging members are mounted for alternate reciprocal movement into and out of locking engagement with the surgical needle. The apparatus also includes a wheel rotatably mounted within the body portion with a proximal end portion of each of the first and second needle engaging members connected to opposing sides of the wheel such that rotation of the wheel simultaneously retracts one of the needle engaging members and advances the other. Also disclosed is a method of manipulating a surgical needle inside a body cavity using a surgical instrument having a control mechanism, a first jaw and a second jaw, where at least one of the jaws is mounted for movement between a first position adjacent the other jaw and a second position spaced apart from the other jaw.

    • A surgical instrument for performing an anastomosis includes a housing having a proximal end and a distal end; a shaft extending from the housing distal end; and a disposable loading unit configured and dimensioned to retain a plurality of surgical fasteners, the disposable loading unit extending from the shaft and forming a juncture with the shaft, the disposable loading unit including: i) opposed split-sections pivotably connected to facilitate movement of the opposed split-sections between open and closed configurations, the opposed split sections being movable through a firing stroke from a first position to a second position and back to the first position to form a plurality of surgical fasteners; and ii) a pivot lockout member including a latch portion which extends between the opposed split-sections, the latch portion including a contact surface which interacts with a corresponding surface formed on at least one of the opposed split-sections to retain the opposed split-sections in the closed configuration, wherein upon return of the fastener pusher member to the first position from the second position, the pivot lockout member is displaced relative to the opposed split sections to an unlocked configuration.

    • Apparatus including a frame; a generally elongated endoscopic portion connected to the frame and extending distally therefrom; a pair of jaw members cooperating with a distal end of the endoscopic portion, the jaw members disposed in opposing relation and being relatively pivotal about a common point between at least an open position and a closed position, each of the jaw members including: a distal portion including a first surface adapted for engaging tissue, the first surface having a recessed portion formed therein and a second surface being of smooth continuous construction; a proximal portion including pivot means adapted to cooperate with the inner rod member; and an intermediate portion being recessed relative to the distal portion such that upon contact of the jaw members, the intermediate portions are spaced apart from each other. The apparatus may further comprise means for rotating the endoscopic portion. In a preferred embodiment, the apparatus is a unipolar electrosurgical biopsy forceps and is provided with conducting means attachable to the frame and in electrical communication with a conductive endoscopic portion for receiving an electrical current from an electrical source. The jaw members are also electrically conductive. Electrical insulating means may be selectively disposed on the instrument for insulating predetermined portions thereof from electrical energy.
