    • Described are a secure communications system and method for transmitting analog signals. The secure communications system includes an analog multiplexer, an analog demultiplexer, a plurality of analog communications channels each at a different wavelength, and a pair of sequence logic modules. Analog signals applied to the analog multiplexer are scrambled onto the multiple communications channels. The demultiplexer descrambles the transmitted scrambled signals to reproduce the original analog signals. The sequence logic modules provide a channel selection signal to implement synchronous pseudorandom switching of the analog signals amongst the analog communication channels. The sequence of the switching between analog communications channels can be pseudorandom in sequence and in time. The channel selection signal is responsive to a key shared between the sequence logic modules. An attacker having access to the analog communications channels cannot retrieve the original analog signals without access to the shared key.

    • Conditional communication settings may be defined by a user of a communications device to be transmitted with a communication to a receiving device, where the receiving device may be restricted from performing a user-specified type of communication operations with a user-specified contact until the conditional communication settings are satisfied. The conditional communication settings may include a condition value setting, which may be a task to be performed by a recipient, a date and/or time, a location, an operation to be performed by a third party contact, or other suitable criterion. The receiving device may detect whether such condition value setting has been satisfied. Unless the condition value setting has been satisfied, the receiving device may be prevented from performing the user-specified type of communication operation with the user-specified contact.

    • A communications system by which a user may provide inputs using an accessory device is provided. The accessory device may provide instructions to the communications device over any suitable wired or wireless communications path. The accessory device may include any suitable input mechanism for providing an input, including for example one or more switches, sliders, knobs, keys, motion sensing components, environmental sensing components, or any other input mechanism that the user may actuate. A communications system by which a communications device may transmit urgent communications requests is provided. The user may select an urgent option when transmitting a communications request to cause the recipient communications device to enable an urgent mode in which the recipient communications device may change the notification scheme to ensure that the recipient receives the urgent communications request.

    • Call features for an Automatic Call Distribution (ACD) system implemented within a packet-based telephone environment are disclosed. Within a packet-based network, data messages are transferred between the ACD system and customer telephone stations while the customer waits for an attendant to become available. These data messages allow the customer to be informed of his/her current status within the priority order and further allows the customer to initiate a number of customer oriented operations. These operations include selecting music to listen to while waiting, requesting to be alerted when an attendant becomes available, and initiating a browser session for accessing data information. Overall, the status reports in combination with the initiating of one or more of the customer oriented operations can make the time spent waiting for an attendant a more productive and pleasant experience for the customer.

    • A mechanism is described that enables encrypted end-point communications in a VoIP network to be accessed by a service provider. The mechanism includes a session information retrieval component which gathers session information such as encryption keys for each session that traverses a network element. The encryption keys may be used to decrypt data to make it available for lawful interception. A media stream monitoring component monitors media streams and verifies that the identified keys for each session are valid, to ensure continuity in compliance with LI regulations. Advantageously a security alert component may be used to controls further session operation for those sessions identified as potential security risks. With such an arrangement, the service provider can satisfy the legal requirement to provide interception, verify that the accuracy of the legal interception support and take appropriate steps to handle security risks.
