    • The invention relates to a sensorless electric motor and a method of controlling such an electric motor, which motor comprises a permanently magnetic rotor, a stator having at least one winding, and a power stage for influencing the current flowing through the winding. As a function of a predetermined commutation duration (T_K), a commutation period is defined, during which period the direction of the magnetic field generated by current flow through the winding is not modified, during which period a commutation completion operation (107) and a commutation initiation operation (109) take place, and which period starts at a first commutation instant (t_KN) and ends at a second commutation instant (t_KN+1); preferably, commutation timing is adjusted, based upon a value of induced voltage picked up at a currently non-energized one of the winding strands, during a plateau portion (108) of a winding voltage trace, located temporally between commutation instants.

    • A memory device, e.g. a capacitor, is provided for a collectorless DC motor. This component is charged whenever a particular rotor position is reached. In so doing, a voltage value or quantity on this memory device is changed. This quantity is compared to another quantity, which is dependent on a desired parameter, e.g. ambient temperature or gas or dust concentration. A reference signal is produced when a particular reference criterion is satisfied. The difference between the beginning of this reference signal and a second predetermined rotor position, which follows the initial predetermined rotor position with respect to time, is measured, and on the basis of this measurement, the current flow of the collectorless DC motor is influenced or regulated. In particular, the current can be toggled on and off as the rotor passes certain predetermined positions.

An energy storage device (170) is provided which, during normal operation of the motor (102), is chargeable from the DC link circuit (30, 32) and serves, upon cessation of the signals from the calculation arrangement (80), to make the semiconductor switches (118, 122) of the other bridge half conductive, and thereby to short-circuit the stator winding arrangement (106) through those semiconductor switches (118, 122) in order to decelerate the permanent-magnet rotor (104) and to thereby minimize risk of human injury.
