    • Starved source diffusion methods for forming avalanche photodiodes (APDs) are provided for controlling the edge effect. The edge effect is controlled by reducing edge gain near the edges of an APD active region. This is accomplished by creating a sloped diffusion front near the edges of the active region. The sloped diffusion front is advantageously formed in a single doping step by using a patterned mask during doping. The patterned mask reduces the depth to which dopants diffuse in areas where it only partly covers the underlying layer. By covering more of the underlying layer nearer the edge and progressively less towards the center, the sloped diffusion front is formed. The shallower diffusion depth near the edge reduces the edge gain, and therefore the edge effect. As a result, an APD to fiber misalignment is less likely, and possibility of edge breakdown is greatly reduced.

    • Neutral electrolytes, relatively neutral electrolytes, metal oxides, metal hydroxides and/or organic exothermic hydration chemicals may be hydrated with water at a controlled location in a subterranean formation to generate sufficient exothermic heat to at least soften and possibly melt and flow bitumen at or near the location. This controlled and localized heating would be useful in drilling through relatively thick bitumen or “tar” beds. In one non-limiting embodiment the exothermic hydration reaction does not generate appreciable amounts of gas. Alternatively, the exothermic reaction may be used to liberate hydrocarbons from gas hydrates in an embodiment where the evolution of gas is acceptable.

    • A system and method for filtering a frame, the method includes: (i) processing, by a processing unit executing instructions, at least one portion of a frame to provide at least one processed frame portion; (ii) performing, by a hardware filter, deblocking filtering of the at least one processed frame portion to provide at least one filtered frame portion; and (ii) storing the at least one filtered frame portion in a memory unit that is accessible by the processing unit; whereas the stage of processing is responsive to previously filtered frame portions.     • A truck assembly and luggage associated therewith includes a base panel, a bottom panel and side panels. The bottom panel and the side panels intersect the base panel at a mutual edge. Two wheel cavities extend through the base panel and the bottom panel and across the mutual edge to receive wheels. Axles are positionable in mounting panels to each side of each wheel cavity. The mounting panels include semicircular mounting surfaces and access passages thereto. Mounting caps include plates and extended bosses with cap surfaces forming segments of a cylinder to cooperate with the semicircular mounting surfaces to form cylindrical mountings. Axles are positioned in the cylindrical mountings and in turn rotatably mount the wheels. Reusable fasteners in the form of screws hold the plates to the base panel of the truck assembly. A slidably mounted handle associated with the luggage case is positioned to be parallel to the bottom panel and at the far side of the case from the base panel.
