    • An external resonator which includes a multiple resonator with parameters which allow stable wavelength control, and a variable-wavelength light source includes such an external resonator are provided. The external resonator is a multiple resonator which is made up of first to third ring-shaped resonators, each having different light path length, and connected in series via optical coupling means. The parameters of the multiple resonator are characterized in that all the following Expressions , and hold: L1={M1/(M1−1)}L0    L2={M2/(M2−1)}L0    M2−1=(M1−1)2    where L0 is the light path length of the first resonator, L1 is the light path length of the second resonator and L2 is the light path length of the third resonator, and M1 and M2 are integers of 3 or greater.

    • An optical coupler comprises a tapered waveguide formed so that a waveguide width may be narrower as going from a predetermined starting position toward an emission end of a light signal. A difference between a first coupling factor and a second coupling factor is set within a predetermined range. The first coupling factor is the coupling factor to a waveguide having the same width as that in a first position in an inherent mode in the case where the tapered waveguide is cut in the first position. A second coupling factor is the coupling factor to a waveguide having the same width as that in a second position where is separated at a predetermined distance from the first position along a direction toward the emission end in an inherent mode in the case where the tapered waveguide is cut in the second position.

    • A cartridge accommodates a recording medium etc, and includes an opening and a shutter for opening and closing the opening. The shutter surface is formed with a hole with which an external drive member engages for driving the shutter. An inner side peripheral surface of the hole, upon which at least the drive member impinges when opening and closing the opening, is constructed of a bending portion continuous from the shutter surface. The bending portion can be worked as a continuous surface by punching out a prepared hole so as to leave a portion corresponding to the bending portion and thereafter bending it. A resinous protection layer having a thickness more than 12 &mgr;m is provided on the shutter surface upon which the drive member impinges when engaging with the hole.

    • The electrometer includes an external electrical conductor, a surface electrometer, an inner electrical conductor, an amplifier circuit, and a control section. The external electrical conductor has a first section for probing an electric potential of an object of interest and a second section adapted for contacting said object. The surface electrometer detects a potential of the first section. The inner electrical conductor is isolated from the external electrical conductor, supports the surface electrometer and shields it from an external electric field. The amplifier circuit converts the output of the surface electrometer into a low-impedance signal and amplifies it. The control section computes the electrical potential of the object based on the output of the amplifier circuit. The first section is configured to adapt to a measurement by the surface electrometer.
