    • An isochronous data pipe provides a bi-directional path for data between an application and a bus structure. The isochronous data pipe includes the ability to send, receive and perform manipulations on any isochronous stream of data, including data on any number of isochronous channels. The isochronous data pipe is a programmable sequencer that operates on the stream of isochronous data as it passes through the isochronous data pipe. The isochronous data pipe is programmed by an application to perform specific operations on the stream of data before the data is either transmitted across the bus structure or sent to the application, thereby pre-processing and manipulating the data before it is delivered to its destination. The operations are performed on both the packet header and the data field of the data packet. The isochronous data pipe can be stopped and started on the occurrence of specific events. In an alternate embodiment of the present invention, the isochronous data pipe is programmed to send and receive both isochronous and asynchronous data, including generating requests and appropriate packet headers.

    • A recording medium cartridge includes a memory circuit for storing information concerning signals recorded on the recording medium within the cartridge. The information is stored in the memory circuit in the form of a hierarchic data structure which includes a plurality of data packets having a predetermined form and length. Each data packet includes a code indicative of a level in the data structure to which the data packet belongs. At least some of the data packets include data indicative of starting and ending positions on the recording medium of recorded signals which the data packet represents. The hierarchic (or “tree”) data structure facilitates rapid retrieval and reproduction of the signals recorded on the recording medium, particularly when the recording medium is a magnetic tape. The tree structure also facilitates storage of information in connection with recording of additional signals on the recording medium.

    • A method of synchronizing each local clock to a master clock in a data bus system is described. In an embodiment, the data bus system includes a plurality of nodes each having a local clock. Initially, a clock source for each local clock is the respective local clock generator of each node. During formation of a data bus configuration for the data bus system, each node assigns either a first identifier or a second identifier to each port that is coupled to another port. If a node has a first identifier port, the node changes a clock source for its local clock from the local clock generator to a particular clock recovery circuit that is coupled to the first identifier port. In another embodiment, a clock source for each local clock is initially the respective multiple mode clock recovery circuit (MMCRC) operating in the unlocked mode. During formation of a data bus configuration for the data bus system, each node assigns either a first identifier or a second identifier to each port that is coupled to another port. If a node has a first identifier port, the node changes a clock source for its local clock from the MMCRC operating in the unlocked mode to the MMCRC operating in the locked mode, which is coupled to the first identifier port. The local clock of the root node serves as the master clock for synchronizing the local clocks of the other nodes.

    • A system for packet parsing and data reconstruction in an IEEE 1394-1995 serial bus network includes a network interface unit, a processing unit, and a memory wherein an operating system resides. The operating system includes a streaming services module and a multimedia Application Program Interface (API) module. The network interface unit receives a stream of packets from a transmission device. Each packet includes a header portion, and may also include a data portion. The data portion, if present, stores data content generated from source data organized in accordance with a predetermined format. The streaming services module stores and then parses the received packets. A method for packet parsing and data reconstruction includes the steps of receiving a packet stream; storing a first and a second packet; locating a header portion within the first packet; and determining whether a header portion within the second packet immediately follows the header portion within the first packet. The method may also include the steps of determining whether the first packet corresponds to a particular boundary within the source data, such as the beginning of a digital video (DV) frame; and transferring data content within the first packet to a buffer.
