    • A multiline check valve assembly has an elongated body which defines a fluid passageway and which is formed with a plurality of valve cavities that are in fluid communication with the fluid passageway. Each valve cavity has a resilient valve element disposed within the cavity and each valve element rests in the cavity with one end against a protrusion disposed in the cavity for centering the element within the cavity. The resilient valve element is biased to urge its other end against a valve seat that surrounds an opening to the valve cavity to create a fluid tight seal with the valve seat and close the opening. In addition, an access port is formed circumferentially around both the valve seat and opening to establish a fluid communication path through the access port to the fluid passageway in the body when the valve element is separated from the valve seat. Specifically, when an appropriate fluid line connector is inserted into the access port to urge against the resilient valve element, the valve element is deformed away from the valve seat to complete the fluid communication path between the access port and the fluid passageway. In an alternate embodiment, the body of the valve is substantially cube-shaped and has a plurality of valve cavities disposed transversely therein, each of the valve cavities being in fluid communication with the fluid passageway that is formed by the valve body.

    • The present invention is directed to a system and method for providing care to a patient, comprising a patient care device having a number of configuration databases stored in a memory in the device. Each configuration database preferably includes protocols, operating limits, rule sets and/or operating features that collectively define an operating environment, or personality, of the device. Selection of a specific configuration database preferably is based at least in part upon patient-specific information obtained from any location in a distributed hospital network. Examples of such patient-specific information include patient age or size, patient medical characteristics, a location of the patient or a location of the care device. In a preferred embodiment, programming a patient care device to deliver a drug to a patient entails activating a configuration database and scanning a machine-readable drug label identifying a particular protocol stored in the activated database. The selected protocol includes default parameters for delivering the drug, and the label optionally includes instructions for deviating from the default protocol.

    • An infusion system comprises a first pump device that delivers a first infusate, preferably a medication, to an IV infusion line and a second pump device that delivers a second infusate, preferably a neutral carrying solution, to the IV line. The infusion system also includes a measurement device that determines an amount of undelivered first infusate remaining in a receptacle. Furthermore, the infusion system includes a control system that communicates with the first and second delivery devices and the measurement device to determine an optimum first infusate infusion flow rate based on the determined amount of undelivered first infusate remaining in the system, a predetermined volume of fluid to be infused, and a predetermined infusion time period, and for controlling the first delivery unit accordingly. The present invention also provides methods for infusing a medication into a patient.

    • A system and method for monitoring, managing and controlling medication delivery from a central location is provided. A central computer displays medication orders and ongoing medication administrations for a health care facility. The central computer checks medication delivery against a database of medication administration guidelines, including guidelines for medication interactions with other medications and with patient conditions and provides an indication of any detected incompatibilities. A clinician at the central location may adjust the medication administration parameters in response to detected incompatibilities and communicate with a caregiver at the point of care to provide decision support. In one embodiment, the central location is a pharmacy at the healthcare facility.
