    • Provided is a storage mechanism that readably migrates a content of data from one recording medium to another over generations in a readable manner and provides the contents of the records from a current recording medium. A read/write controller comprises a mechanism for preparing an archive recording medium of a first generation having a plurality of records recorded therein and a mechanism for migrating the records from the recording medium of the first generation to a recording medium of the next generation (the third generation subsequent to the first generation) and further to recording media of following generations one by one. The migration mechanism generates migration information including a mapping table between record numbers of the first generation and a current generation and holds the migration information as data in the recording medium of the current generation.

    • A device, method, and computer program product are provided for migrating pieces of data from a first recording location to a second recording location based on access frequency. The device comprises an obtaining unit for obtaining, for each of the pieces of data, first information indicating the number of times any data has been read from the first recording location after the piece of data is written to the first recording location and second information indicating the number of times the piece of data has been read from the first recording location. Moreover, the device comprises a tracking unit for tracking access frequency with respect to each of the pieces of data using the first information and the second information. Furthermore, the device comprises a determining unit for determining recording positions of each of the pieces of data in the second recording location based on the tracked access frequency.

The apparatus for redundant identification of a storage medium format is provided with a plurality of modules configured to functionally execute the necessary steps of writing a Format Identification Data Set (“FID”) to a plurality of predetermined locations on the storage medium, determining a format of the storage medium based on information in the FID, and setting a starting position on the storage medium for a subsequent operation, wherein the starting position is associated with the format of the storage medium. In a further embodiment, the storage medium may include a data storage tape housed within a tape cartridge, wherein the tape cartridge further comprises a cartridge memory (“CM”) for storing a CM FID.

    • A method for recording data freshness degrees by a tape drive is disclosed. During the recording of a set of data and a data freshness degree associated with the set of data a tape recording medium, a determination is made as to whether or not a fault occurs during the recording. In response to a determination that a fault occurs during the recording, a data freshness degree of data within a faulty portion on the tape recording medium is obtained. The data freshness degree of the set of data is then immediately recorded before the faulty portion on the tape recording medium. The data freshness degree is higher than the data freshness degree of data within the faulty portion.
