    • A recording method is provided for recording data into an information recording medium, in which the number of data rewrites into the same area is limited. The recording method comprises the steps of (a) performing a search for unallocated areas in an information recording area and retaining, in a memory, unallocated area identifying information for identifying at least one unallocated area found by the search, (b) determining whether or not an unallocated area satisfying a record request is present among the at least one unallocated areas identified by the unallocated area identifying information, and (c) when an unallocated area satisfying a record request is present among the at least one unallocated areas identified by the unallocated area identifying information, allocating the unallocated area as an area for recording data and recording data into the allocated area.

    • An image coding and recording/reproducing apparatus for encoding video signals using variable-length coding and for recording the video signals in units of fixed-length sync blocks includes: an orthogonal transform unit for performing an orthogonal transform on each transformation block including a plurality of pixels and for obtaining orthogonal transform coefficients for each transformation block; a coding processor for generating encoded data for each encoding group including a plurality of the transformation blocks, the encoded data being obtained by variable-length encoding the orthogonal transform coefficients of each transformation block and by arranging the resultant encoded transform coefficients in the order of increasing component frequency starting with a low frequency component; a storing processor for dividing a plurality of the sync blocks into low frequency sync blocks and high frequency sync blocks, each of the low frequency sync blocks being assigned with one of the encoding groups, a first portion of the encoded data of the encoding group being stored in the corresponding low frequency sync block from a beginning to an Lth bit, a second portion of the encoded data at a (L+1)th bit and beyond being stored in the high frequency sync blocks in a prescribed order; and a recording unit for recording the low frequency sync blocks and the high frequency sync blocks which store the encoded data therein on a recording medium.

    • Input image data is divided into a plurality of blocks. An orthogonal transform device subjects the input image data to orthogonal transform every block. A memory temporarily stores output data from the orthogonal transform device. A first quantizer quantizes output data from the memory. A coding device codes output data from the first quantizer into variable-length code words. A code amount accumulation device accumulates a code amount of output data from the coding device. A second quantizer separates the output data from the orthogonal transform device into K different groups, and assigns M different scale factors to the respective blocks and quantizes the output data from the orthogonal transform device in the blocks with the related scale factors, where K and M denote predetermined natural numbers. A block code amount calculation device calculates a code amount per block. An initial scale factor calculation device determines an initial scale factor designed to make one of a frame or field into a predetermined code amount. A group target code amount calculation device predicts target code amounts in the respective groups from the block code amounts represented by the output data from the block code amount calculation device. A scale factor correcting device corrects the initial scale factor in response to a prediction error between an actual code amount accumulated by the code amount accumulation device and the predicted target code amount each time the coding device outputs the data of one group.
