    • A vestigial sideband/quadrature amplitude modulation (VSB/QAM) receiver, which receives both VSB and QAM signals and restores a carrier wave with a restored symbol clock after restoring a symbol timing in a front portion of a carrier wave restoration unit. The receiver has an analog-digital converter for A/D converting in accordance with a frequency higher than a symbol frequency of a received signal; an interpolator for calculating a signal value on the original symbol location after a signal from the A/D converter is applied; the carrier wave restoration unit for restoring a carrier wave by selectively using an automatic frequency control (AFC) and a digital frequency phase locked loop (DFPLL) in accordance with a VSB/QAM mode after a signal from the interpolator is applied; a timing processor for receiving a signal from the carrier wave restoration unit, detecting a timing error after changing a symbol input time in accordance with a VSB/QAM mode, controlling the interpolator based on the detected timing error, and generating a restored clock; and a VSB sorter for extracting a VSB receiving symbol.

    • A blind channel equalizer for deciding a blind coefficient of a channel equalizer for use in a digital television signal processor. The blind channel equalizer in a vestigial sideband (VSB) receiving system includes a comparator for determining a boundary level value according to the distribution of occurrence probabilities of VSB symbol levels and comparing the determined boundary level value with a received symbol, a blind decision coefficient allocator for allocating one of three blind coefficients according to an output result of the comparator, and a subtracter for performing subtraction with respect to the received symbol and an output of the blind decision coefficient allocator to provide a blind error. Inverse transformation is not necessary during the blind channel equalization, thereby simplifying the hardware structure. In addition, National Television System Committee (NTSC) interference signals can be prevented so that the performance of channel equalization can be improved.

    • A receiver including an NTSC rejection filter for eliminating interference signals from a high definition signal. The ratio of the energy of an expected high definition signal to the energy of an NTSC signal is determined. An NTSC signal sequence is generated according to the determined ratio. The number of filter taps is determined, and an autocorrelation matrix of the NTSC signal is calculated using the generated NTSC signal sequence. The power of all interference noise in the output of the NTSC rejection filter is used as a cost function, with respect to the input NTSC interference signal, the additive Gaussian noise and the VSB signal. A filter coefficient equation, for minimizing the cost function, is obtained by differentiation, and then the autocorrelation matrix is substituted for the equation, to calculate coefficients of the NTSC rejection filter.
