    • A glow discharge starter having an hermetically sealed envelope of vitreous material, a seal located at one end thereof and containing an ionizable medium. A pair of electrical conductors extend through the seal and terminate in a spaced relationship to form a pair of electrodes within the envelope. At least one of the electrodes has a bimetallic element secured thereto. A coating comprising lanthanum, nickel and at least one radioactive dopant is disposed on a surface within the envelope. The coating is sufficient to reduce the dark effect by improving the dark starting of the glow discharge starter.

    • A compact PAR lamp (10) has a hollow body (12) arrayed along a longitudinal axis (14) and has an open end (16) and a substantially closed neck end (18) and containing a light source capsule (20) within the hollow body (12) and coaxial with the longitudinal axis (14). The light source capsule (20) has electrical lead-ins (22, 24) that extend therefrom and exit via the neck end (18). A first parabolic reflector (26) is formed within the body (12) and has a wide portion (28) adjacent the open end (16) and a narrow portion (30) spaced therefrom along the longitudinal axis (14). A second reflector (32) is formed within the body (12) and extends from the narrow portion (30) into the neck end (18). A lens (34) closes the open (16), and a base (36) is attached to the closed neck end (18). In an alternate version the light source (20) comprises an arc discharge vessel (44) containing electrodes (46, 48) having termini (46′, 48′) defining an arc gap (50) therebetween and the focal points of the second reflector (when the second reflector is ellipsoidal) correspond with the termini (46′, 48′).

    • A lamp assembly 10 has a light source 12 having two sealed electrodes 14, 16, sealed in a seal area 17 and defining a lamp axis 18. A concave shell 20 has an internal surface 22 with a reflective surface 23 formed thereon. The concave shell 20 has a neck 24 defining a neck cavity 26 and a reflector axis 28. The neck 24 is provided with an electrical connection 30 and a mechanical support for the light source 12. The shell 20 surrounds the source 12 to reflect light from the source 12 to a field to be illuminated during lamp operation. The source 12 and the reflector surface 23 are oriented with the lamp axis 18 substantially co-axial with the reflector axis 28, and at least a portion of at least one of the electrodes, for example, 14, extends into the neck cavity 26. A zone 32 is formed in the neck cavity 26 for substantially redirecting specular reflection away from the seal area.

    • An electric lamp assembly includes an electrodeless lamp, including an electrodeless lamp envelope, a transformer core disposed in proximity to the lamp envelope and an input winding disposed on the transformer core. The lamp envelope preferably comprises a closed-loop, tubular lamp envelope, and the transformer is preferably disposed around the lamp envelope. The electrodeless lamp envelope encloses a fill material for supporting a low pressure discharge. The electrodeless lamp further includes an amalgam located within the lamp envelope. The input winding receives radio frequency energy which produces a low pressure discharge in the lamp envelope. The electrodeless lamp includes a thermal bridge between the transformer core and the amalgam, so that the amalgam is heated by the transformer core during operation.

    • A method to press mold heavy wall metal halide lamps (with reduced glass mass in end seals) is disclosed. Wall temperature in a metal halide lamp may be normalized by varying the wall thickness in relation to the heat falling on the interior surface, and the heat lost through the exterior surface. Increasing the wall thickness, acts to spread the heat, and decrease the wall temperature. Thinning the wall, acts to concentrate the heat, and increase the wall temperature. By press molding the lamp glass and simultaneously reducing the glass mass in the end seals, the desired wall thickness may be obtained without excessive heat loss in the end seals to result in an isothermal internal profile.
