    • An aqueous coating composition containing: (a) an aqueous carrier medium: (b) a pigment having a pH below 7.0; (c) an AB block copolymer pigment dispersant resin of (1) an A block of a hydrophobic polymer having amine groups; and (2) a B block of a hydrophilic polymer having hydroxyl groups and carboxyl groups; the AB block copolymer has a number average molecular weight of 5,000-20,000 and contains 20-80% by weight of a polymeric A segment and correspondingly 80-20% by weight of a polymeric B segment; wherein the pigment and the dispersant are present in a pigment to dispersant weight ratio of 0.1/1-20/1; (d) a film forming polymeric binder containing carboxyl groups and (e) a crosslinking agent which on curing of the coating composition will react with the carboxyl and hydroxyl groups of the AB block copolymer and the carboxyl groups of the film forming polymeric binder. Pigment dispersions of the AB block copolymer and process for forming the dispersions also are part of this invention.

    • The present invention is directed to a process for process for predicting gloss of a coating resulting from a wet layer of a low gloss coating composition, such as automotive OEM or refinish paint. The process includes measuring reflectance of the layer of the coating composition applied over a test substrate and then allowing the layer to dry and/or cure into a coating. Thereafter, its gloss is measured with a gloss meter. The process is repeated with varying amounts of one or flatting agents added to the composition and the reflectance vs. gloss is plotted on a graph and by using a curve fitting equation a gloss prediction curve is obtained. By measuring the reflectance of a wet layer of a target low gloss coating composition the gloss of a coating that would result from such a layer is then predicted by using the gloss prediction curve. The process is most useful during the manufacture of coating compositions, such as automotive OEM and refinishes paints.

The low gloss metallic color coating composition can be produced from a high gloss metallic color coating composition with the addition of a matting agent. The disclosure is also directed to a coating system using the process. This disclosure is also directed to a method for matching color, flake appearance, and gloss of a coating. The processes, methods and systems of this disclosure are particularly useful for producing a low gloss metallic color coating composition having a target gloss value when the high gloss metallic color coating composition comprises both metallic effect pigments and color pigments.
