One or more symbols, such as OFDM symbols, may be transmitted according to the selected frequency hopping pattern and the selected timing.

In regards to a method implemented by a master device, a scan for an advertisement is caused to be performed and an advertisement packet is received during the scan that defines a time period in which the source device of the advertisement packet will be performing a page scan. The method also determines the time period in which the source device of the advertisement packet will be performing the page scan. The method also causes a page to be issued during the time period in which the source device of the advertisement packet will be performing the page scan, and then receives a page response in response to the page. In addition, a polling packet to the plurality of remote devices is transmitted, and one or more responses to the polling packet are received. Each of these responses is sent by one of the remote devices during its corresponding polling response transmission time. In addition, communications according to the second wireless transmission mode may be conducted during the designated time interval.

When the wireless communications device has not formed a piconet with one or more remote devices, the device scans the wireless channel for a predetermined amount of time immediately following each of the periodically occurring time intervals.
