    • A variable-frequency oscillator, generating a succession of spikes of adjustable repetition frequency F, works through a pulse subtractor and a frequency divider with several cascaded decadic stages and a terminal binary stage into a phase comparator also receiving the output of a generator of reference frequency f. The pulse subtractor comprises two units separated by the first decadic divider stage, each unit supressing an incoming spike in response to a pulse applied to a control input thereof. The last decadic divider stage has a set of output leads connected in parallel to several digital selectors, one of them serving to transmit control pulses to the first subtractor unit whereas the others generate a train of control pulses for the second subtractor unit through a chain of decadic step-down stages individually loaded by the lowest-ranking selectors whose pulse rates are subharmonically related to reference frequency f. Several coincidence circuits, connected in parallel with the selectors to the output leads of the last decadic divider stage, are also connected to output leads of respective step-down stages in the chain in order to generate timing signals measuring the fraction of a reference-frequency cycle required to make the count of that divider stage equal to that of the associated stepdown stage; during the interval so measured, a compensating current flows into the phase comparator to control the slope of a sawtooth wave generated therein, thereby preventing the subharmonically recurring control pulses from causing fluctuations in the selected oscillator frequency F. The binary divider stage limits the generation of control pulses to oddnumbered halves and the flow of compensating current to evennumbered halves of its operating cycle.

    • An oscilloscope, serving to display the traces of different output voltages of a test circuit representing at least two circuit parameters (amplitude and phase) in various testfrequency bands, is coupled to a graphic recorder through a converter including a source of triangular sweep voltage for the x-deflection of the stylus of the recorder. The cadence of this sweep voltage is substantially lower than that of a triangular scanning voltage (wobble frequency) serving for the exploration of each band, a comprator in the converter generating a coincidence signal upon detecting a match between the two triangular frequencies to pass a sample of the output voltage for deflecting the stylus in the y-direction. Whenever the monotonically varying sweep voltage over- or undershoots the range of the scanning voltage derived from the oscilloscope input, the prolonged absence of the coincidence signal gives rise in the converter to an end-of-sweep signal which, upon every third occurrence, causes a switchover to a different parameter and/or frequency band. The switchover in the oscilloscope input is accompanied by a modification of the basic horizontal and/or vertical control voltage for the stylus so that the new trace is inscribed on a different portion of the paper sheet serving as a recording medium. Each recording cycle includes a high-speed first period for the registration of an upper reference line, a low-speed second period for the inscription of the trace and a high-speed third period for the registration of a lower reference line.

    • The beam of a cathode-ray tube, normally suppressed, is electromagnetically deflected by a triangular current in the x direction and by a sinusoidal current in the y direction, thereby producing an invisible grid on the oscilloscope screen. Whenever the y-deflection signal matches either an input signal to be visualized or a selected reference signal, the beam is turned on for a small fraction of a y-sweep cycle to produce part of a luminous trace, representing the input signal, and a straight base line corresponding to the reference signal. In order to vary the position and/or the scale of representation of the trace with maintenance of its correct position relative to the base line, the y-deflection signal is subjected to multiplicative and/or additive modification.

    • An equalizing network for correcting phase and amplitude distortions comprises three cascaded operational-amplifier stages, all with grounded noninverting inputs, the first two of them having capacitive feedback to operate as inverting integrators while the third one has a resistive feed-back to function as a summing inverter. The first stage receives on its inverting input, by way of identical resistors, the input voltage and the output voltage of the network and feeds the inverting input of the second stage through an adjustable resistor serving for selection of the frequency of maximum or minimum attenuation. The last-mentioned input also receives the input voltage and the inverted output voltage through respective branches of a potentiometer, serving for adjustment of the attenuation, whose slider is in series with a further adjustable resistor controlling the phase delay. The connection between the potentiometer extremities and the network terminals may include a reversing switch to change the sign of the attenuation.

    • An incoming oscillation, whose frequency during a brief reading interval is to be determined, is converted into a first pulse train of cadence f to be compared with the cadence f'' of an astable multivibrator responsive to a stored control voltage. During the reading interval the control voltage is modified by a signal depending upon the difference of the two cadences until the same are identical; during an adjoining extended storage period, the modified control voltage keeps the multivibrator operating at the unknown cadence f which is then measured by a binary counter.

    • The operating frequency of an electronically adjustable oscillator is continuously determined by a digital counter establishing a variable measuring interval during which the number of oscillator cycles reaches a magnitude preset in a digital selector. A feedback circuit from the output of a comparator, receiving the values stored in the counter and in the selector, readjusts the oscillator to make the measuring interval equal to a predetermined base period (e.g., of 1 second), consistent with the selected frequency, starting concurrently with that base period. A timing circuit periodically emits a pair of reference pulses marking the beginning and the end of the base period, at least the second pulse being subject to shifting under the control of a synchronization monitor to compensate for any time lag between the beginning of the base period and the start of the first full oscillator cycle; a further shifting of the second reference pulse, under the control of an ancillary selector, enables the generation of frequencies whose chosen magnitudes lie between adjacent settings of the digital selector. A pair of such digital selectors, alternately connectable to one of the comparator inputs, may serve for the establishment of upper and lower limits of a sweep range for the oscillator frequency; a third selector, effective during the sweep, may generate a frequency marker whenever the value registered therein matches the momentary output frequency of the oscillator.
