    • A data recording/reproducing method and apparatus for correcting data errors on a recording medium even with the use of a conventional ECC. The data recording/reproducing apparatus includes a generation unit that generates predetermined data units by dividing an ECC sector including error correction codes generated by an error correction encoder into prescribed data units and encoding the prescribed units into iterative encoded data units using an iterative encoder so that the predetermined data units may include the iterative-encoded data units, a recording unit, a reproducing unit, an iterative decoder for conducting iterative decoding on the predetermined data units, and an error correction decoder. The apparatus further includes a distribution unit for distributing the predetermined data units generated by the generation unit. The distribution unit distributes the iterative encoded data units using at least two ECC sectors and records the distributed data units on a recording medium.

    • A data readout device generates decoded data based on a data bit determined by performing a hard-decision on likelihood data. The likelihood data is generated using an iterative decoding method corresponding to a turbo-coding process. The decoding process is performed on a sampled value obtained by sampling a signal read out from a magneto-optical disk at a predetermined sampling period. A reliability determination part detects whether each obtained data bit was obtained from likelihood data within a predetermined range defined with respect to a histogram of log likelihood ratios. When it is detected that a data bit was obtained by a hard-decision on likelihood data within the predetermined range, the data bit is regarded as being obtained by a hard-decision whose reliability is not sufficient. In this way, the error correcting decoder can perform ECC-based decoding operations including loss-correction processes depending on respective reliability-determination results that distinguish reliabilities among respective data bits.

    • A magneto-optic recording medium, which has a multilayered magnetic layer including a recording layer and a reproducing layer, is capable of reproducing a micro mark by utilizing a temperature distribution generated by laser beam irradiation for transferring a domain wall from the recording layer to the reproducing layer and by utilizing the movement of the domain wall. Each of the recording areas is arranged so that the recording area is adjacent to a magnetic partition area of a neighboring track. The recording areas and the magnetic partition areas are arranged alternately in one track, and an edge of a record mark is positioned in the recording area. Preferably, when reproducing information recorded on this magneto-optic recording medium, two neighboring tracks are irradiated with one laser beam for reproduction so that high speed transmission can be performed.

    • A magneto-optic disk recording system capable of canceling shifts of the front edge and the rear edge of the record mark due to accumulation of heat. The recording system includes a magneto-optic disk having a record magnetic film, and a magnet for applying a bias magnetic field to the disk in the direction perpendicular thereto. The recording system further includes a laser diode for generating laser beams, an optical head for focusing the laser beam on the disk, a pulse generator for generating square wave pulses with a predetermined period, and a duty ratio controller for alternately increasing and decreasing the duty ratio of the square wave pulses every time data "1" of binary record data is generated. The laser diode is driven by a constant-current circuit for write power. There is connected a switch between the laser diode and the constant-current circuit for write power. The switch is turned on/off in accordance with the output pulse of the duty ratio controller so that the laser diode emits a pulsed beam.
