    • Method and die assembly for necking-in tubular members wherein the die assembly comprises an outer reducing die and an inner die pilot comprised of a T-shaped holder on which is mounted a pilot ring that floats radially on an also mounted spring biased axially floating retaining ring means. The reducing die has a recessed inwardly angled directing surface on the wall of its inner chamber, and the pilot ring has a wide diameter circumferential step surface and two supporting surfaces of lesser diameter. A clearance is provided between the pilot ring supporting surfaces and the outer reducing die. The outer reducing die is brought into telescoping engagement with the marginal edge portion of the wall of a tubular member. This causes the reducing die directing surface to direct the marginal edge portion inwardly against the pilot ring step whereby the edge portion is directed into a groove formed by the pilot ring, the outer reducing die and a control surface which transversely engages the edge of the wall and controls its axial movement in relation to the die assembly. In the groove, the marginal edge portion is formed into a rim of reduced diameter. As the outer reducing die continues to move axially over the tubular wall, the directing surface directs the flow of tubular wall material into the aforementioned clearance and toward the lesser diameter pilot ring surfaces against and along which it rests to form a neck having a diameter less than that of the rim. The method and die assembly accomodates can bodies having side seams and utilizes a spring means to compensate for irregularities in and for changes in wall length which occur during the necking-in operation.

    • A self-opening end closure made of a steel basis sheet metal has both a rupturable score and a shallower non-rupturable score formed in the interior surface of a generally flat central end panel of the end closure. The rupturable score is formed near the periphery of the central panel to define a large removable portion within the central panel, and the non-rupturable score is disposed closely adjacent to but radially inwardly of the rupturable score. This combination of scores and their placement in the interior surface of the central end panel make possible the commercial manufacture, within realistic manufacturing tolerance, of a self-opening steel end closure having acceptable score integrity and openability characteristics.

    • An improved pull tab for a container end closure. The improvement comprises providing in the front panel of the front non-handle portion of the tab a slit perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the tab, and two score lines adjoining and perpendicular to the slit and parallel to each other and to the longitudinal axis of the tab. The slit and score lines together partially define a hinged section of the front panel of the tab through which a rivet affixes the tab to the central wall of the container end closure. The slit and score configuration protects the tab from being accidentally lifted and pivoted and from accidentally rupturing the score in the central wall.

    • An improvement in a container end closure having a central panel and which can have secured to it within an aperture therein, a substantially rigid plug having a tear-out portion defined by score lines, the improvement which comprises including on the interior primer-coated surface of the container end and/or plug, a film which preferably is an unplasticized acrylic multipolymer comprising a blend of (1) a hard resinous terpolymer of acrylonitrile, styrene and methyl methacryalte, and (2) polybutadiene grafted with methyl methacrylate, styrene and acrylonitrile. The film can also be a hard, unplasticized thermoplastic comprising from about 85 to 100 percent polyvinyl chloride and from about 15 to 0 percent polyvinyl acetate. The film isolates the closure or plug metal from the container product and prevents corrosion of the metal and consequent contamination of the product. The acrylic multipolymer film can be applied in a single pass as a direct extrusion coating or film lamination.

    • An apparatus for adhesively securing a seamed release strip to the marginal end portion of a tubular container wherein the strip is moved along a circular path of revolution and simultaneously with the movement of the strip, the container, rotating about its own axis, is moved in a circular path of revolution tangential to the strip''s path and axially aligned therewith so that the lateral edge of the strip is in substantial alignment with the marginal end portion of the container. As adhesive is applied to either the strip or the container in order that one will adhere to the other upon contact. The leading portion of the strip contacts the marginal end portion of the rotating container and is adhered thereto. The container movement and rotation subsequent to the contacting causes the strip to leave its path of revolution and the remaining portion of the strip to adhere around the marginal end portion of the container. The length of the strip exceeds the circumference of the container causing a trailing portion of the strip to overlap the leading portion upon adherence of the strip to the marginal end portion of the container. The strip is then presses against the container causing more intimate contact therewith.
