    • A torsion element such as a shaft portion of reduced diameter connects a driven steering shaft to a manually actuated steering drive shaft. A helical spring coupling connects a driving gear operated by a reversible electric motor in such a way that when the torque applied to the torsion element is at or near zero, or torque can be transmitted from the motor to the driven shaft, whereas the presence of torque causes the spring to be expanded, as a result of which the motor is coupled to the driven shaft with a frictional engagement that increases the transmission as the manually applied torque is increased. As soon as the manually applied torque falls below a threshold value, the coupling of the motor is released. The motor accordingly does not need to have its speed controlled and is operated by a simple directional control responsive to the deformation of the torsion element. The system is essentially fail-safe and accordingly suitable for steering vehicles.

    • A high-speed printer is operative for printing alphanumerical characters by selecting dots of a matrix composed of dots arranged in identical parallel columns which are spaced from each other in the direction of a line of alphanumerical characters to be printed. The printer includes a printing head including printing elements arranged in form of a single one of the mentioned columns. A drive motor moves the printing head along a predetermined path extending in the direction of the line of characters to be printed. A detector arrangement detects the arrival of the printing head at successive predetermined locations along the path of movement of the latter. A synchronizing arrangement generates successive synchronizing signals in response to detection by the detector arrangement of the arrival of the printing head at successive ones of said predetermined locations. A character-generating unit connected to the synchronizing arrangement receives successive synchronizing signals and furnishes to the printing elements successive groups of signals, each group signifying which dots of the column are to be printed, and each group being furnished to the printing elements in synchronism with the receipt by the charactergenerating unit of one of said synchronizing signals.

    • To protect electronic switching elements against short circuits in loads connected in series therewith, particularly switching transistors and the like, a momentary test pulse is generated upon connection of the load to a live circuit.     • In a vehicle having turnable wheels, in an arrangement of the type operative for compensating against forces, such as side wind forces, tending to undesirably move the vehicle laterally, of the type including an arrangement for effecting an automatic compensatory turning of the vehicle wheels in a direction and to an extent counteracting the tendency of such forces to undesirably move the vehicle laterally, the speed of the vehicle is determined and the extent of the automatic compensatory turning of the vehicle wheels is modified in dependence upon the determined vehicle speed. As one possibility, a vehicle-speeddependent upper limit is placed upon the extent of the compensatory turning of the vehicle wheels. Advantageously, there is an inverse relationship between the vehicle-speed-dependent upper limit and the vehicle speed. The relationship may be approximately inversely proportional or only inverse.

    • An internal combustion engine is comprised of at least one engine cylinder, devices for introducing a combustion mixture into the cylinder, and an electrical igniting element operative for igniting the combustion mixture in the cylinder once per ignition cycle. An ignition transformer has a secondary winding connected across the igniting element, and also has a primary winding. A flow of current is established through the primary winding. An electronic switch is connected in the current path of the primary winding to control the flow of current through the primary winding. A triggering unit generates a train of crankshaft-synchronized triggering signals. A monostable control circuit has a trigger input for receipt of such triggering signals, and is operative when triggered into the unstable state for rendering and maintaining the electronic switch nonconductive for the duration of the unstable state, so as to interrupt the flow of current through the primary winding and induce across the secondary winding a voltage surge causing the igniting element to ignite the combustion mixture in the engine cylinder. When the monostable control circuit reverts to its stable state, it renders and maintains the electronic switch conductive for the duration of the stable state, whereby to establish a build-up of current flow in the primary winding in preparation for the next interruption of current flow. The monostable control circuit includes a timing stage operative for automatically increasing the ratio of the duration of the unstable state to the duration of the ignition cycle with increasing engine speed within a predetermined range of engine speeds.
