    • An array of M.times.N electrodisplacive actuated mirrors for use in an optical projection system is assembled by way of: (a) preparing a ceramic wafer made of an electrodisplacive material, having a top and a bottom surfaces; (b) providing on the bottom surface of the ceramic wafer an array of M.times.N first electrodes; (c) forming a first metallization on the top surface thereof; (d) mask bonding; (e) forming an array of M.times.N actuating members by providing M trenches thereon using a sandblasting method; (f) mounting the ceramic wafer on an active matrix; (g) mask removing; (h) forming a second metallization; (i) providing a first photoresistive layer; (j) electroforming; (k) removing the first photoresistive layer; (l) providing a second photoresistive layer; (m) forming a platform with a flat top surface; (n) providing a light reflecting layer; (o) pattern the light reflecting layer, including the platform, into an array of M.times.N mirrors; and (p) removing the second photoresist layer to thereby form an array of M.times.N electrodisplacive actuated mirrors.

    • A transducer for transmitting and receiving ultrasonic energy at more than one frequency includes first and second electrostrictive layers mechanically coupled together such that ultrasonic vibrations in one layer are coupled into the other layer. The first electrostrictive layer is laminated between upper and middle electrical contact layers, and the second electrostrictive layer is laminated between middle and lower electrical contact layers. A bias voltage arrangement selectively produces within the first and second electrostrictive layers electric fields oriented in opposite directions or electric fields oriented in the same direction. When the electric fields are oriented in opposite directions, the transducer has a first resonance frequency. When the electric fields are oriented in the same direction, the transducer has a second resonance frequency. By selecting the number of electrostrictive layers in a transducer and by selecting the thicknesses of different layers, a transducer having two or more different desired resonance frequencies may be produced.

    • This invention is for an accelerometer having a stack comprising both linearly responsive transducers and rotationally responsive transducers for measuring accelerations in the six degrees of freedom. Linear transducers such as lifters and tangenters can be combined in a stack with rotational transducers such as teeters and twisters which react to accelerations. Position sensors can be placed adjacent the transducers to sense their movement. When the position sensors detect a change, a current is applied to the transducer to return the transducer to its rest state. The current applied to return the transducer to its rest state is proportional to the acceleration experienced by the transducer, thereby providing a means to measure the acceleration on the transducer.

    • A ring-shell projector capable of simple disassembly and reassembly. The underwater transducer has a driving ring and a pair of flexible diaphragms on either side of the ring with their rims attached to the ring. The ring is formed of an array of electrostrictive elements and spacer elements, each spacer element having a pair of radial, outward extensions. A pair of coupling rings are provided each adapted to be positioned between the rim of one flexible diaphragm and a corresponding array of spacer element extensions to provide sealing engagement between the flexible diaphragms and the driving ring. Besides simplifying the repair of a projector, the improved design is more versatile, allowing a single driving ring to be used with different sets of shells, having different resonance frequencies and/or bandwidths. Moreover, an expensive step in the construction of a ring-shell projector is obviated, namely, the bolt holes in the metal staves and the subsequent custom matching of the shell holes.
