    • A percussion detecting apparatus and an electronic percussion instrument, which are capable of not only providing excellent percussion feeling, but also visually indicating a percussion pattern of a beat applied to a percussion surface, so as to serve for percussion practice as well as to increase interest in the percussion practice. A head of the percussion detecting apparatus is formed of an air-permeable material and has a light transmitting property. The head includes a percussion surface. A drum shell supports the head. A head sensor detects a beat applied to the percussion surface of the head and outputs a beat signal indicative of the sensed beat. A light radiating part is disposed on an opposite side from the percussion surface of the head so as to perform visual indication corresponding to a percussion pattern of the beat applied to the percussion surface, at least through the percussion surface, based on the beat signal output from the head sensor.

    • An optical transducer includes a photo-electric converter supported by a shank flange rail and optical modulators respectively attached to hammers of an automatic player piano; since a neck portion makes a photo-modulating pattern closer to the rotational axis of each hammer than a boss portion adhered to the side surface of the hammer shank, the photo-modulating pattern is rotated in a narrow space in the vicinity of the rotational axis so as to permit the photo-electric converter to monitor the hammer motion between the rest position and the end position without any interference with other component parts, and the boss portion is easily adhered to the side surface under the condition that a worker lifts the hammer over the adjacent hammers.

    • An exemplary retainer ring for a head of an acoustic drum can produce a visual display that allows an observer to visualize timing associated with percussive sound. An exemplary retainer ring includes a vertical wall disposed at a radius about a central axis and a laser diode module that includes a lens to emit visible radiation as a fan-beam. In such an exemplary retainer ring, the lens is positioned such that the fan-beam crosses the central axis and terminates as an arc in a groove in the vertical wall. When an object interrupts the fan-beam, the object reflects visible radiation of the fan-beam to thereby produce a visual display that allows an observer to visualize timing associated with percussive sound (e.g., sound produced by the object contacting a head of an acoustic drum). Various other exemplary arrangements, devices, systems, methods, etc., are also disclosed.

    • A laser activated synthesizer system for efficiently translating finger positions on a surface into sounds. The laser activated synthesizer system includes a housing member which encloses a plurality of lasers near an upper surface, each laser aligned with a piano like key arrangement etched into a lower surface, a laser pickup, a control unit and a synthesizer. The lasers are each individually touch sensitive and require minimal effort to activate. The keys are etched in either a 61 key configuration or 88 key configuration. The laser pickup senses the activation of each laser while the control unit electrically connected to the laser pickup determines which laser(s) are being activated and sends the information to the synthesizer to emit the correct note or chord.

    • A computer program for an interactive computer music game is stored on a medium that can be read by a general purpose computer. When read and executed, the program causes the computer to perform functions, including associating a music track on a user compact disc (CD) inserted in the computer's CD-ROM drive with a selected song associated with a music track on a reference CD, and synchronizing music data stored by the computer to the music track on the user CD, where the music data has been derived from the music track on the reference CD associated with the selected song. The program generates user-CD data characteristic of the digital data on the user-CD track, and compares the user-CD data with reference-CD data characteristic of the digital data on the reference-CD track. Based upon the comparison, the computer generates a synchronization function characteristic of timing differences between the reference-CD track and the user-CD track, and adjusts the timing of the music data with the synchronization function. The comparison can include determining a correlation function between the sets of data.
