    • An adapter for connecting a plastic pipe to a metal pipe. The adapter consists of a connector having a first end and a second end with an opening extending through the second end of the connector and extending a distance through the connector toward the first end of the connector forming an inner peripheral surface. The second inner peripheral surface of the connector is threaded forming a second inside diameter of the connector which is smaller than an outside diameter of the plastic pipe. The end of the plastic pipe is threaded into the opening through the first end of the connector with the threads digging into an outer peripheral surface of the plastic pipe and compressing a portion of the plastic pipe near the first end thereof for connecting the plastic pipe to the connector. The second end of the connector is adapted to be connected to one end of the metal pipe.

    • Plastic tubing of extruded polybutylene and the like has an end reformed into a structural bulb sealing surface which includes a stop flange permitting the tube to be drawn into sealing engagement with a mating part. The tube end is reformed in a press or jig which includes two molds, with the tube end projecting through one mold and toward the other. The other mold is normally chilled or cooled but includes an I.D. mandrel or pin projecting therefrom. The pin is insulated from the other mold. The pin may be heated and/or cooled during the reforming cycle of the process to enable uniform heating of the projecting tube end from both the inside (I.D.) and outside (O.D.) of the tube end. The process and apparatus of the invention provides a more uniform and integral reformed tube end. The cycle time of the process may also be reduced resulting in greater productivity with less energy consumption.

    • A riser assembly for the connection of an underground gas line to a meter or other device includes a tubular polyethylene adapter having its lower end connected to the upper end of a polyethylene tubular member, which is connected at its lower end to the underground pipeline. A connecting sleeve of corrosion resistant, electrically nonconductive material, such as a combination of fiber glass and epoxy resin, maintains the upper end of the adapter in spaced relationship to the lower end of a metallic tubular member, which is connected at its upper end to the meter or other device. A polyethylene support sleeve surrounds the outer surface of the mutually connected end portions of the adapter and the lower tubular member. The adjacent ends of the lower portion connecting sleeve and upper portion of the adapter are maintained in fluid-tight engagement by the combination adapter support sleeve and resilient O-ring secured in the upper portion of the adapter. The riser assembly can also include a metallic outer support conduit surrounding the riser assembly and extending from the connection between the lower end of the metallic upper tubular member and the upper end of the connecting sleeve to a point at the lower end of the lower polyethylene tubular member near the connection to the underground pipeline. The outer support conduit may be closed for storage or transport at its upper end by an epoxy seal and at its lower end by a resilient end plug.
