    • A high speed line printer includes a print-receiving medium, a continuously moving type carrier, a ribbon positioned between the print-receiving medium and the type carrier, and a bank of hammer units having individually fired but simultaneously retracted hammers positioned adjacent the print-receiving medium. Each hammer is magnetically retracted and held against the force of a flat spring armature. Upon release of a hammer, the stored mechanical energy of the spring causes the hammer to be driven to a printing impact and a damper prevents subsequent printing impacts due to hammer oscillation. Each hammer unit comprises a pole piece with a convex pole face and a hammer which includes the flat spring armature secured at one end to the pole piece and an impact element mounted on the outer surface of the armature at the other, free end thereof. The damper has a low mass body which includes energy absorbing material and is spring biased to a normal position in contact with the impact element. The utilization of multiple impacts between the damper and hammer permits the damper mass to be reduced so as to reduce the total movable mass, thereby decreasing hammer flight time and increasing efficiency. An interposer is operable to prevent the printing of an unwanted line by inhibitng the flight of the hammers in the event of an error condition such as a power failure.

    • In a document printing machine comprising a plurality of interconnected modular sections, there is disclosed herein a printer module having a self container control system. Documents, to be printed upon, are sequentially passed through the printer module under the control and drive of either one of two different speed drive units. The second drive unit initially functions as a control gate to control the feeding of documents into the printer module. When the printing operation is to begin, the second drive unit moves the documents through the printer module at a positively controlled printing speed. After the printing operation, the first drive unit moves the documents out of the printer module at a high speed. In order to maintain the correct character pitch between adjacent serially printed characters, a timing unit is operatively connected to the first drive unit. This timing unit is responsive to drive variations and accurately divides each character pitch into a plurality of intervals. Each interval controls one or more printer operation functions including the actual print operation. In order to maintain the synchronism between the movement of the documents and the character pitch, the second drive unit is clutched from the first drive unit.

    • A circuit for selectively suppressing the printing of nonsignificant zeros by a high speed printer which prints numeric characters in successive columns of decreasing significance by individually operating selected print hammers. The circuit includes a plurality of print suppressing circuits, each of which is associated with one of the columns and adapted to inhibit operation of the hammer in its associated column when a nonsignificant zero is to be printed there. When actuated, each print suppressing circuit also feeds a signal to the print suppressing circuit associated with the next least significant column to condition it to inhibit printing of any zeros in the next least significant column since any such zeros will be nonsignificant. A switch is associated with each column to inhibit its associated print suppressing circuit and, thereby, inhibit zero suppression in the column. However, each switch, when closed, also passes a signal to the print suppressing circuit associated with the next least significant column, conditioning it to inhibit printing of any zeros in its associated column. This starts a new zero suppression field in the next least significant column. Of course, the suppression of nonsignificant zeros in this column may also be inhibited by closing the switch associated with the column.
