    • A unit is presented for the transfer of a gaseous component in one stream to or from a liquid component in another stream, in which a membrane assembly is wound spirally around a central rigid cylindrical core. The membrane assembly comprises a continuous length of flattened tubular membrane with a gas net passing through the intermediate portion of the membrane from end to end thereof and substantially the width of the interior of the tubular membrane. In forming the coil, a net separator is wound between the membrane layers of the coil. An inlet tube for one of the components communicates with one end of the membrane and an outlet tube for the same component communicates with the other end of the membrane. Means is provided for passing another of the components longitudinally of the coil between the membrane layers from one end of the coil to the other end. The specific embodiment of a blood oxygenator is described.

    • An oxygenator primarily for human blood has a stator with a cavity partly defined by a first substantially flat wall and a peripheral wall and has a rotor with a second substantially flat wall facing the first wall. On their facing sides both walls have supports highly permeable to gas. Both supports are covered by gas-permeable, hydrophobic membranes between them defining a passage for liquid extending from near the center of the cavity to near the peripheral wall. Gas is conducted through the supports and membranes on the stator and on the rotor. Blood is supplied through the stator to the cavity near the center thereof and, without an external pump, is impelled to flow through the passage and out an outlet in the peripheral wall, the membranes having irregularities or vanes acting as centrifugal impellers.

    • An extracorporeal, disposable, dialyzer for use in a variety of artificial kidney or other mass transfer systems, which includes a sheet of plastic material supporting a flattened tube of membrane material, the sheet of support material consists of a continuous sheet of contoured, substantially uniform thickness material including a series of spaced apart hollow protrusions extending outwardly from each side thereof, the summits of the hollow protrusions defining membrane support surfaces on each side of the sheet, and the summits being arranged with respect to each other in predetermined wave patterns dimensioned and arranged such that, when an elongated length of the sheet is formed into a roll having predetermined inner and outer peripheral dimensions, the wave patterns will never be directly superimposed thereby avoiding the tendency of corresponding hollow protrusions to interdigitate and occlude the fluid flow passages.

    • A dialyzer cartridge of roll type particularly suitable for artificial kidneys, comprising two layers of strip form facing each other and a dialyzing membrane arranged between the layers. The layers and the membrane are wound in spiral form. The layers are provided with projections uniformly distributed thereon and defining top portions which are mutually aligned over the surface of the layers. Grooves are defined between the projections to allow the passage of a dialyzing liquid, the grooves of the first layer forming an angle with the grooves of the second layer such that the two facing layers contact by interposition of the membrane only on a part of the top portions of the projections, thus avoiding embedding of the layers and obstructions for the passage of the dialyzing liquid.
