The cartridge driving mechanism includes a transmission mechanism which transmits the driving force of the motor to the cartridge when the turntable is located at the upper position, and which does not transmit the driving force of the motor to the cartridge to render the cartridge free to move when the turntable is positioned at the lower position; anda coil spring for urging the cartridge from the reproduction end position to the reproduction start position. The lockout members are positioned inside and outside the caddy insertion path, respectively, in response to the presence of and the absence of a record/spine assembly inside the player. The lockout members have square edges and sloping edges which are, respectively, disposed perpendicularly and non-perpendicularly to the caddy insertion path when the lockout members are positioned in the caddy insertion path. When an empty caddy sleeve is inserted into the player to retrieve a retained record/spine assembly, its leading edges engage the respective sloping edges of the lockout members to position the lockout members outside the caddy insertion path. If a full caddy is inserted into the player, while it already has another record/spine assembly inside, the square edges of the lockout members engage the leading edge of the full caddy to prevent it from going in.

The reproducing apparatus is provided with a turntable for rotating the disc-shaped recording medium, closing member locking mechanism provided at the innermost part of the disc-shaped recording medium reproducing apparatus, and N detection switches provided at the innermost part of the reproducing apparatus and disposed asymmetrically on the left and right sides with respect to a line which passes through the center of the turntable in the disc insertion direction. The case comprises a jacket for accommodating the disc-shaped recording medium, and a closing member for closing an opening of the jacket and being locked by the locking mechanism and confront the detection switches upon the disc-shaped recording medium being loaded into the reproducing apparatus. The closing member has cutout desired areas symmetrical on the left and right sides each of which consists of N desired sections where cutouts for discrimination are to be formed. The cutout desired sections for discrimination at symmetrical positions on the left and right side are brought into confront the same detection switch out of the N detection switch when the closing member is reversed up and down together with the jacket and the disc-shaped recording medium. One cutout desired section out of the pair of cutout desired sections symmetrical on the left and right sides has a cutout or a non-cutout for discriminating peculiality of a first side of the disc-shaped recording medium, and the other cutout desired section having a cutout or a non-cutout for discriminating peculiality of a second side of the disc-shaped recording medium.

The arresting mechanism allows the insertion of the jacket having or not having the lid member into the reproducing apparatus in a state where the detecting mechanism is not performing a detecting operation.

摘要： A record is removably subject to occupancy of a protective caddy comprising a jacket and a record retaining spine. The record is enclosed in the caddy such that a first side of the record is associated with a given side of the spine. To load a record into a player, such as a video disc player, an occupied caddy is inserted into an input slot provided in the player. A record extracting mechanism mounted in the player removes the retaining spine and the associated record from the jacket during jacket withdrawal subsequent to the occupied cover arrival at a fully inserted position in the player, whereby the record and the spine are retained within the player. A switch mounted in the player is subject to conditioning in a first state in response to insertion of the occupied cover with the given side of the spine facing upward, and is subject to conditioning in a second state in response to cover insertion with the given side facing downward. An indicator responsive to the state of the switich and disposed on the front instrument panel of the player provides an indication of the record side subject to playback.
