    • A percussion bit used in air hammer apparatus. The bit has a substantially flat, lower face in its main body portion from which compressed air discharges from bit passages to sweep formation cuttings or chips towards the sides of the bit body and upwardly around the exterior of the body. A multiplicity of tungsten carbide, or similar, buttons comprising rear or shank portions are embedded in the body, with tapered forward portions projecting substantially from the bit face for indenting and impacting upon the bottom of the bore hole being drilled in the formation, the forward portions of each button protruding from the bit face more than about 0.7 the diameter of its shank portion, whereby larger formation cuttings or chips are produced in the bottom of the bore hole, the bit drilling at a faster rate.

    • A percussion bit for hard rock formations includes a body having a keyhole shaped slot formed through it which causes the body to vibrate laterally as a tuning fork whenever the bit is impacted. Because of the vibration of the body, hardened inserts mounted in the body form a borehole not only by vertical percussive engagement but also by lateral percussive engagement due to the tuning fork action of the bit and by scraping due to rotation of the bit in the borehole. Passageways extending through the body direct compressed air through the bit to remove drilling debris from the borehole.

    • A partially solid head bit having a flow passage therethrough located at approximately the center of the bit is shown. The bit is designed for use in conjunction with a hammer action drilling apparatus. The flow passage extends through a shank of the bit to the bottom thereof. Surrounding the shank is a substantially hemispherical spiraled burr having an opening therethrough. The burr pushes against a shoulder of the shank during drilling. The mating surfaces of the shank and burr are lubricated by a suitable oil reservoir. On spirals of the burr and on the lower end of the shank are mounted hardened inserts for impacting against and breaking up the formation through which the bit may drill. The bottom of the shank may be even with, extend through, or be recessed with respect to the lower edge of the burr. The shank is angled a few degrees off the centerline of the drilling string to cause a wobbling action upon rotating the drill bit.
