    • Large size cast monolithic refractory repair modules which may be used to replace existing silica bricks within a coke oven heating wall. The modules are formed from a castable refractory mix having very high dimensional stability over a wide range of temperatures. Each of the modules is a rectangular parallelepiped having one or more vertically extending flues formed therein, one end of a module being adapted to conform to the end shape of the damaged heating wall, the other end of the module being adapted to interfit with existing brickwork. The modules are assembled by initially removing damaged brickwork from the heating wall and then placing in the new modules of this invention which are mortared in place. The large size cast modules of the invention are manufactured by selecting a material which when cast will have the desired characteristics, mixing the dry refractory material with a relatively small amount of water, pouring it into a mold on a shaker table and vibrating the mold when filled, and then by firing the cast material after initial set at progressively higher temperatures up to 800 degrees Fahrenheit over a period of almost 60 hours. In addition, novel interfitting modules having specific shapes and sizes may be used for the repairs of ceilings above the coke chambers defined by adjacent heating walls.

    • A reconstruction of a heating wall of a coking oven. The reconstruction includes utilization of a novel large size cast refractory repair module which may be utilized to replace existing silica bricks within a coke oven heating wall.     • To seal against the surround of the door opening of a coke oven, the door has an elongate knife-edge element which engages the surround and is held against a sealing surface on the side of the door. The knife edge element is movable past the sealing surface on the door for adjustment. The knife-edge element is divided into a plurality of mutually abutting parts in the adjustment direction. In order to allow a greater amount of adjustment of the knife edge element and to make assembly of the seal easier, holding means e.g. a plurality of brackets, are provided to hold the parts of the knife edge together in the adjustment direction and to restrain at least the outermost part from lateral movement relative to the door. The holding means permits relative sliding of the parts in the longitudinal direction.

    • A patching composition for developing a superior bond with silica refractories at temperatures of 1200.degree. to 2400.degree. F. The composition comprises three basic components: (1) a high melting phase, e.g. silica brick, fireclay grog, magnesia or high alumina grain, (2) a bonding component, e.g. sodium silicate and (3) a low melting phase, e.g. window glass. It will generally be desirable to employ a fourth component for fluxing, such as soda ash or other alkaline earth compounds. The improved results are achieved by the use primarily, of a low melting phase such as window glass, bulb glass or lead glass having a softening point between about 900.degree. and 1750.degree. F. (482.degree. to 954.degree. C.), employed in an amount of about 6 to 25% of the total solids composition.
