摘要： An embodiment of the present invention provides a method for manufacturing a composite preform from tape material, including feeding a tape section into a tape section guide that suspends the tape across a tooling surface, moving at least one of the tape section guide and the tooling surface relative to each other to position the tape section at a desired location and orientation relative to the tooling surface, moving the tape section toward a pre-existing tape section disposed on the tooling surface, and tacking the tape section to the pre-existing tape section. A corresponding apparatus for manufacturing composite preforms is also disclosed.

In some implementations of the process, control of the process including control of the temperature of the adhesive and film to a temperature approaching the heat distortion temperature for the film will vary the strength of the bond from a frangible bond to a bond the tears the film, (a film-tearing bond). Some implementations of the process may be used to produce bonded films at web speed rates that are significantly higher than commercial rates for heat seal processes.

摘要： Components may be interconnected using liquid materials such as liquid adhesive and solder. To prevent undesired movement between the components during the assembly process and to prevent the liquid material from flowing into undesired areas, an attachment and dam structure may be provided. The structure may be formed from a substrate such as a flexible polymer film coated with adhesive. When interposed between first and second components, the structure attaches the first and second components and prevents movement between the first and second components. The structure may have one or more edges adjacent to the liquid material to block the liquid material from flowing while the liquid material is in its liquid state. Once the components have been connected, the liquid material can be solidified.

摘要： A process for wrapping an edge flap of a workpiece having a covering sheet extending over a front face thereof and edge flaps protruding outwardly beyond the front face. The workpiece is positioned on a table, with one edge and the protruding flap overhanging and protruding outwardly beyond the table. The workpiece is disposed in proper location by positioning elements and clamps fix it to the table. adhesive is applied to the edge flap. A wrapping arrangement is provided with wiping blades so that upward movement of the wiping arrangement causes a first wiping blade to engage the edge flap and wipe it upwardly into engagement with an edge face, following which the wiping arrangement moves the second blade over the workpiece so that a second wiping blade engages the end part of the flap and wipes it downwardly into engagement with the back face of the workpiece.

摘要： A process for bonding a vented hollow component includes placing a preformed component with an aircraft skin on a tool surface, with bonding agent applied between the component and the skin. A vacuum bag is sealed about a vent in the preformed component. The vent may be formed through the vacuum bag and the component, or the vent may be preexisting (i.e., an open end of the preformed component or an aperture through the component). The vacuum bag is sealed to the tool surface with a temporary seal or adhesive, to enclose the preformed component and the skin. A vacuum is applied within the bagging material, to compress the preformed component with the aircraft skin, and the bagged assembly is autoclaved to cure the bonding agent. The vent in the preformed component facilitates pressure equalization within and outside of the component to enhance compression against the aircraft skin.

A tab of the bottommost panel is lifted upwardly to partially overlap the topmost panel to form the locking closure.
