    • An improved DX circuit may be connected to signaling and reference leads of a DX signaling link, without need to balance the internal impedance of the DX circuit against that of the external DX signaling link. The DX circuit senses the magnitude and direction of current flow on the leads, and operates on the principle that when a near end signaling circuit is on-hook, a positive current flow indicates that a far end signaling circuit is off-hook and a current flow of zero indicates that it is on-hook, while if the near end signaling circuit is off-hook, a negative current flow indicates that the far end signaling circuit is on-hook and a current flow of zero indicates that it is off-hook. The arrangement allows the DX circuit to properly function irrespective of the resistive load presented by the DX signaling link. To enable the DX circuit to function with various capacitive loads, it also detects the rate of change of current on the leads and, in the absence of a change in status of the near end signaling circuit, provides an output representative of a change in the on-hook/off-hook status of the far end signaling circuit, immediately upon detecting a sufficient rate of change.

    • Disclosed is a line interface circuit (103) having a negative feedback circuit (205) for maintaining the DC voltage on an electrically isolated communications line at a reference level such as ground for private branch exchanges using ground start supervisory signaling. The feedback circuit comprises a low-pass filter (301), a difference amplifier (302), and two voltage-to-current sources (303,304) each having a high output impedance. The low-pass filter passes only the voltage on the line below a predetermined frequency. The difference amplifier subtracts the passed voltage from a ground reference level to form a difference voltage. Depending on the polarity of the difference voltage, the two voltage-to-current sources source and sink current to and from the line to maintain the DC voltage on the line at the reference level. A load resistor (305) also included in the feedback circuit keeps the circuit from oscillating where the phase shift of any signal through the circuit is an integer multiple of 360 degrees. The high output impedance of the two voltage-to-current sources does not effect the impedance balance on the line.

    • DC Saturation effects in the VF transformer of a DPT are reduced or eliminated with apparatus diverting cental office battery loop current away from windings of the transformer when a trunk circuit is seized for an off-hook condition of a calling parties telephone handset. A physically smaller transformer having increased inductance may then be employed for providing increased return loss at low frequencies. The apparatus comprises a current amplifier that is electrically connected across tip and ring lines, with a first switch means in its feedback path, and second switch means for AC coupling a transformer winding to the lines. When the trunk is idle for an on-hook condition of the handset, the amplifier is disabled and the lines are terminated with a large resistance. When the trunk is seized for an off-hook condition of the handset, binary PF and CF signals cause the current amplifier to shunt the resistor and to draw a prescribed amount of DC loop current on the lines for energizing a central office A-relay. This also turns on the second switch means for passing VF signals on the lines to and from the transformer, while blocking DC current from the winding, and terminating the lines with a prescribed impedance. When the calling party is dialing, the CF signal opens the feedback path so that the amplifier is turned hard on and off by pulsing of the PF signal for changing the termination impedance and causing resistive pulsing in the central office.
