    • A method of establishing calls between an ingress MPC (the calling party) and an egress MPC (the called party) in MPOA enabled ATM based networks. The call establishment method utilizes the call request SETUP, CONNECT and CONNECT_ACK messages in creating the shortcut VCC between ingress and egress MPCs. The calling party is adapted to send a READY_IND message in a reliable manner to the called party indicating that it is ready to receive frames over the shortcut VCC. The called party starts sending data over the shortcut VCC only when it knows that the calling party is ready. The called party knows the calling party is ready upon receipt of a READY_IND message or at least one data frame on the shortcut VCC. The calling party knows that the called party is ready to receive frames when it receives the CONNECT message. Since the READY_IND message sent by the calling party may get lost, the calling party is adapted to re-send the READY_IND message repeatedly until it is certain the called party has received it. The calling party utilizes a timer whereupon expiration, the READY_IND message is re-sent to the called party and the timer is restarted.

    • Provided are a method and system that allow one or more network protocol emulators, composed of one or more network protocol emulation controllers and one or more network protocol emulation entities, which are overlaid onto the one or more base networks utilizing different communications protocols for the purpose of allowing said one or more networks to be accessed and utilized as if the one or more networks were utilizing protocols emulated by the one or more network protocol emulators. The method and system utilize the following steps. Apprising the one or more network protocol emulation controllers of network capability information inherent within protocols utilized by the one or more networks onto which the one or more network protocol emulation controllers are overlaid. Directing that the one or more network emulation controllers utilize the one or more network capability information of which they have been apprised to define communication capabilities for certain network protocol emulation entities within the control of the one or more network protocol emulation controllers. Directing either the one or more network protocol emulation controllers or the one or more certain network protocol emulation entities within the control of the network protocol emulation controllers to utilize such defined communications capabilities to ensure that the network protocol emulation entities do not request a communications link to one or more other network protocol emulation entities that substantially exceeds the defined communication capabilities of the one or more other network protocol emulation entities.

    • An MPOA system for establishing communication by using layer 3 protocol on an ATM network, in which data about the layer 3 address of a source of data packets is added to an address resolution request packet which is transmitted in order to establish a shortcut VCC toward a destination of the data packets in each communication node and hence transmitted to the destination, and in the case of accepting the address resolution request packets to be transmitted in order to establish the respective shortcut VCCs toward the destination of the data packets, as for the same communication, from a plurality of the communication nodes, a shortcut VCC is established only between the destination and the communication node remotest from the destination on the network.
