    • A feedback controller in a PWM amplifier comprises a signal input for receiving a pulse width modulated (PWM) input signal (Vin) whose duty cycle represents a desired analogue output signal. A feedback loop filter 518 generates a filtered error signal (Vint) comprising a filtered representation of differences between the input signal (Vin) and a feedback signal (Vfb). A comparator (520) compares the filtered error signal with a reference to generate a provisional PWM switching control signal (C) for controlling the PWM amplifier (500). A pulse conditioner (532) receives both the provisional PWM switching control signal (C) and the PWM input signal (X=Vin) and outputs to the amplifier (500) a conditioned PWM switching control signal (Y), modified in accordance with predetermined constraints in relation to the PWM input signal. The pulse conditioner includes a single pulse function (534) whereby only a single pulse is permitted for every pulse in the input signal, thereby eliminating oscillations that can otherwise Occur under over-voltage supply conditions. Missing pulse and minimum pulse width functions (536, 538) can also be provided.

    • A single stage amplifier system that produces an accurate linear output signal during low power demands and a pulse modulated output signal during high power demands is disclosed. A control circuit provides a linear signal and a pulsed signal to an output stage in response to a select signal provided by an external circuit. The single output stage includes two transistors in a push-pull arrangement that can be driven in their saturation regions when a pulsed signal is provided by the control circuit or driven within their linear region when a linear signal is provided. The single stage amplifier system can be used in either a half bridge amplifier system or an H-bridge amplifier system.

    • A negative feed-back amplifier is provided in which a distortion of signals is reduced and a dynamic range is increased. An input signal is input to a base of a transistor and is output from a collector as a reversed signal and a non-reversed signal is output from an emitter. The reversed signal is input to a base of a transistor and is output through a resistor from an emitter of the transistor. The non-reversed signal is input through a condenser to a base of a transistor and is output from a collector in a reversed form. An output signal from the transistor is input to an emitter follower of a transistor at high input impedance and output at low output impedance and then attenuated by resistors and negative feed-back signal is produced. The negative feed-back signal is input through a resistor to a base of the transistor to be added to the input signal.

    • The present invention teaches a variety of output stages, buffer circuits, and power amplifiers as well as methods for buffering electrical signals. According to one embodiment of the present invention, an output stage includes an input, an output, an error stage coupled between the input and the output and responsive to a difference between an input signal present on the input and an output signal present on the output, the error stage being operative to generate a current control signal related to the difference between the input signal and the output signal, a current mirror coupled to the error stage and responsive to the current control signal to generate a demand driven current signal related to a magnitude of the current control signal, and an amplification stage coupled between the input and the output. Furthermore, the amplification stage is responsive to the input signal and to the demand driven current signal to generate the output signal on the output such that a voltage of the output signal is substantially equal to a voltage of the input signal. Some embodiments provide a unipolar output signal while other embodiments provide a bipolar output signal. In addition, a number of embodiments utilizing bipolar transistor technology, FET technology, and having different configurations which vary the current gain are taught.

    • A novel power amplifier output stage is taught which provides rail-to-rail output voltage swings, high current source and sink capability, which is capable of class AB operation to provide low distortion amplification. The power amplifier of this invention is suitable for fabrication in integrated circuit form, thereby achieving the small size necessary for use with miniaturized disk drives, as well as low cost and high reliability. A first transistor is driven by the output of a transconductance amplifier, in response to an input control current. The first transistor is configured together with the transconductance amplifier to provide a current which can be sensed and from which a feedback signal is provided to the transconductance amplifier to establish the first current having a known relationship to the input control current. A second transistor is used which is driven by the output of the transconductance amplifier, the second transistor being sized significantly larger than the first transistor, to provide a sizable output current in response to the input control current and with feedback control being provided by the first transistor. Low drop out voltage regulators using the novel current amplifiers of this invention are also taught.
