    • An electromagnetic switching device comprises a bobbin with a coil mounted thereon, the bobbin forming a protective tube with a contact chamber at each end. Embedded in the bobbin are a plurality of terminals connected to the coil, pole shoes, and contact terminals connected to the pole shoes. An armature is disposed in the tube and has two free end portions coated with contact material facing end portions of the pole shoes that extend from opposite walls of a respective one of the contact chambers. At least one permanent magnet is mounted between flanges of the bobbin at each end of the tube, these magnets and the pole shoes being disposed symmetrically in relation to the longitudinal axis of the tube and at least one further axis perpendicular to such longitudinal axis.

    • An electro-magnetically operated device is described in which a magnetisable armature, typically a length of thin naturally resilient mild steel, is sandwiched between, and extends from, two parts of a magentic circuit which contains an air gap into which the armature extends. An electromagnet polarizes the armature along its length so as to cause the end thereof in the air gap to be attached to one or the other of the two poles of the magnetic circuit defining the gap. The armature is designed so as to be capable of adopting a mid-position between the poles of the air gap if the curent flowing in the electromagnet is reduced to zero. Equalising the air gaps and adjusting the size of the gap relative to the resilience of the armature will produce a bistable characteristic in which the armature will not remain in the mid-position, but will always remain in contact with one pole or the other, and is shifted from one to the other by a pulse of current of appropriate polarity. Adjustment of the size of the air gap on one side or the other of the armature introduces an out of balance in the magnetic circuit enabling the device to adopt a monostable characteristic instead of a bistable characteristic.

    • An electromagnetic relay comprises a coil bobbin of plastic material defining a protective tube, a contact chamber and a magnet chamber which together form a space that extends the entire length of the bobbin and is initially open at both ends. A permanent magnet is disposed in the magnet chamber, serving to seal one end of the space. This magnet has a surface exposed to the contact chamber and is made of a material activatable as a getter. A contact actuator is mounted to extend along the protective tube with a free end extending into the contact chamber. A pair of pole shoes each have a first end in proximity to the permanent magnet and a second end extending into the contact chamber. These second ends form fixed contacts for cooperating with the free end of the contact actuator. After assembly of these parts the space is subjected to a vacuum and an elevated temperature to drive off moisture and activate the getter. The vacuum is then replaced with an atmosphere of a protective gas, and the other end of the space is sealed with a closure.
