    • A disk unit is capable of detecting a track, the track width of which deviates from a normal value, with high accuracy at high speed. A HDD includes a read head, a disk and defective-track detecting part. The disk has servo data including bursts A, B written thereon. The servo data is used to position the read head to a track center. The defective-track detecting part detects a defective track as below. The sum of the amplitude of bursts A and B, which have been read by the read head by one read operation, is divided by the amplitude of a burst C or D to obtain a compared value. If the compared value deviates from a criterion by a specified percentage or more, it is judged that the track width of a track is abnormal. Since bursts A through D are written without trimming, the size of bursts A through D in the track width direction are kept constant regardless of the track width. Accordingly, a gap G fluctuating in accordance with the track width is formed in the radial direction between bursts A and B. Bursts A and B are read at a position including gap G, and the above-mentioned compared value is determined, and thereby a defective track is detected.

    • Apparatus using information about the extent of errors in sensed data for performing as a control function at least one of adjusting the position of a magnetic head to improve alignment relative to a track and selecting from two or more data signals a data signal having the least amount of errors is shown. The apparatus uses information about the extent of errors to perform a control function for reproducing the data stored in predetermined storage locations in a storage media. The apparatus positions a transducer for sensing from predetermined storage locations stored data containing at least one constraint. The transducer generates a first signal representative of the data containing at least one constraint stored in the sensed data and any errors introduced into the sensed data during the sensing. An input device, preferably in the form of a detector is responsive to the first signal for generating a control signal containing information about the extent of errors in the sensed data and for extracting a data signal. The control signal is used for performing the above control functions. A method for using information about the extent of errors for a control function to improve the extracted data stored at the predetermined storage locations is also shown.

    • A disk drive and related methods are provided for tuning the control of an actuator for position mode seeking of a head between tracks on a disk based on a measured open loop response of the actuator. The disk drive includes a rotatable data storage disk, a head, an actuator, and a servo controller. The actuator positions the head relative to the disk responsive to a current command signal. The servo controller carries out a position mode seek of the head between tracks on the disk by generating the current command signal which is varied in response to a current feedforward signal that defines a head position profile during the seek, varied in response to a position response signal that defines an expected actuator movement response of the head to the current feedforward signal, and varied in response to a current feedback signal. The servo controller measures an open loop response of the actuator to an open loop test current signal, and uses the measured position mode seek performance to vary contributions of the current feedforward signal and the position response signal to the current command signal to improve the position mode seek performance.

    • A disk drive is disclosed comprising a voice coil motor (VCM) driven in a PWM mode using model reference current feedback. The PWM circuitry and VCM form a plant transfer function which varies with changes to the plant characteristics, such as the resistance of the voice coil fluctuating with temperature drift. A plant model having a model transfer function generates an estimated state of the VCM in response to a detected current flowing through the voice coil. A correction block, responsive to the detected current, adjusts PWM timing signals so that the plant transfer function substantially matches the model transfer function.

    • The present invention relates to a write control method of a hard disk drive, a hard disk drive adapting the method, and a recording medium storing a program for executing the method. The write control method of a hard disk drive having a disk where servo bursts are written radially comprises: generating a primary position error signals (PESs) with respect to a target offtrack based on a difference between servo burst signals read from two adjacent servo bursts; generating a secondary PES with respect to the target offtrack based on a sum of the primary PESs or a difference there between; determining whether both the primary PESs and the secondary PES are within a predetermined write bump limit; and performing a write operation at the target offtrack if both the primary PESs and the secondary PES are within the predetermined write bump limit, otherwise prohibiting the write operation.
