    • A system and method of creating and presenting mathematical documents are provided. The system comprises an input/output component for receiving user input and for displaying a mathematical document on a display device, a document repository 104 for storing the mathematical document and a mathematical engine for performing computations. The document includes markup that specifies display options. The method comprises the steps of receiving input data that represent characters, symbols and mathematical operations as well as manipulations and presentation control of the mathematical document, displaying mathematical expressions or a combination of mathematical expressions and text in an electronic document, performing computations on the mathematical expressions contained in the document, and controlling the formatting and display of the document.

    • A method and system for optimizing the horizontal spacing of superscripts and subscripts in open type font designs is disclosed. The system includes a module for vertically aligning and spacing characters and a module for horizontally aligning characters having differing baselines in accordance with cut-in information stored in font tables corresponding to each individual character in the font. This additional horizontal spacing adjustment capability provides for optimum placement of character glyphs having differing baselines, e.g., superscript or subscript. The method includes placing a first/next character on a baseline, retrieving a next adjacent character, determining whether a cut-in associated with one or both of the characters can be applied between the two characters, and then applying the appropriate cut-in. Ascertaining whether a cut-in may apply may be accomplished by evaluating relative positions of adjacent glyph bounding boxes.

    • A character processing apparatus for arbitrarily setting a character pitch when a mathematical formula is input. This apparatus includes: a memory to store character patterns corresponding to character pitches; a keyboard to input character information to read out the character pattern to be displayed from the memory; a display device to display at least the character patterns; a designating device to designate the character pitch of the character pattern to be displayed; a cursor display device for changing the display form of the cursor to designate the display position to display the character pattern in correspondence to the character pitch designated by the designating device, and for displaying the changed display form; and a display controller which, when the character information is input by the keyboard, reads out the character pattern corresponding to the character information from the memory at the display position of the cursor displayed by the cursor display device on the basis of the character pitch corresponding to the cursor display form. With this apparatus, the character pitch and line interval are adjusted. When a mathematical formula is input, the character string constituting this formula can be displayed and printed with a good balance.

In addition, for example, in the input of an element in a root symbol where a left bracket is first inputted. It is then determined that the input of the argument is ended with the input of a right bracket which automatically moves the cursor from the inside of the root symbol to the normal display line position adjacent to the root symbol. Thus the cursor is automatically moved in the respective situations to the normal display line position without an additional instruction from the user.

    • A method and apparatus carried out on a digital computer for creating and editing mathematical equations in a printed document is disclosed. This invention allows the user of a wordprocessing program to create and edit mathematical equations in an efficient and flexible manner through use of a user interface which includes an editing window, a display window, and a palette window. The editing window allows the user to input a textual description of the equation, the palette window provides an alternative method of entering the textual description of the equation by displaying the characters and commands that may be used, and the display window displays the equation as it appears in its final printed form. The textual description for an equation is entered by the user through keyboard characters, extended characters, and by selecting editing commands and characters from the palette window, and the method and apparatus of the present invention processes the textual description and provides simultaneous visual representations of both the textual descriptions and the equations as they will appear in the final printed form.
