    • A light-collecting type liquid crystal display device capable of displaying an image properly is provided. The liquid crystal display device 100 includes a liquid crystal panel 10; an irradiation section 31, a control device 61, and a plate-like member 20 attached to a part (10a) of the liquid crystal panel 10. A light guiding section 40 for collecting natural light 51 and propagating the light is located on a first surface 21 of the plate-like member 20; and the light guiding section 40 is connected to the irradiation section 31. A plurality of optical sensors 46 are provided on the first surface 21 of the plate-like member 20. The irradiation section 31 includes a plurality of LED elements 30. The control device 61 is connected to an LED driving section 63. The control device 61 is connected to the optical sensors 46. The control device 61 is structured to control an amount of light to be emitted from each of the plurality of LED elements 30 by use of the LED driving section 63 based on the amounts of light detected by the optical sensors 46.

    • An LCD having a backlight module is proposed. The backlight module includes an ambient light collector for collecting ambient light; a back plate; a diffuser plate on the back plate; a plurality of optical fibers straightly fixed between the diffuser plate and the back plate and coupled to the ambient light collector. Microstructure is formed on the surface of the optical fibers straightly fixed between the diffuser plate and the back plate, and the microstructure makes light from the optical fibers evenly being emitted. The backlight module utilizes microstructure formed on a surface of optical fibers for evenly distributing light from the surface of the optical fibers. In hence, it effectively guides ambient light into the backlight module via the optical fibers and ensures at the same time that the light is evenly distributed to the backlight module.

    • A reflective color display has at least a color pixel disposed to receive ambient light for front lighting and has a light source optically coupled to the color pixel to provide back light for backlighting. The color pixel has a first sub-pixel and a second sub-pixel. The first sub-pixel has a first luminescent layer with a luminescent material for converting a portion of the ambient light spectrum into light of a first color. An unpatterned mirror is disposed under the luminescent layer of the first sub-pixel and extends through the first and second sub-pixels. The unpatterned mirror reflects at least light of the first color while transmitting the back light to the first luminescent layer for conversion by the first luminescent material into light of the first color.

    • In a screen light computation device, a first polarizing filter (93) blocks P waves reflected by a reflective surface, and screen light; the reflected light sensor (95) receives S waves; a second polarizing filter (83) allows the screen light to pass while blocking the S waves; and a screen light sensor (85), being set at Brewster's angle, where the P waves is not received, still receives some leakage P waves. A screen light extraction computation (LUT; not shown) stores a correlation between the detection value by the reflected light sensor 95 and the detection value by the screen light sensor 85. The LUT is queried, a value of only the screen light that does not include reflected light is computed, and the screen light that does not include ambient light (reflected light) reflected in a display screen of the monitor is detected without turning off a backlight of a monitor.

    • An daylight-coupled display includes a plurality of passive backlights cascaded in a stack for backlighting of LCD panels or static display panels. The display includes a diffuser to transmit light to multiple cascaded curved reflectors, each of which reflects light for backlighting of the display. A polarization rotator is located within the backlight such that the reflectors provide the correct polarization of light to the LCD panel for backlighting of it. One daylight-coupled display can include an active light source to provide light to the reflectors A secondary light source can provide light to at least one of the reflectors to provide backlighting of the display in low lighting conditions.
