    • A generally cylindrical centrally bored housing is coaxially secured at one end portion within a short length of copper tubing. The other end of the copper tubing is contoured for connection with a fluid containing line. A tubular core, having a transparent disk closing its bore adjacent one end portion and a line piercing tip formed on its other end portion and having an overall length slightly less than the combined length of the housing and copper tubing, is coaxially received by the bore of the housing. A cap, removably engaged threadedly with the free end of the housing, forces the line piercing tip into the line and seals the core with the housing and the line.

    • A permanent access valve for use in sealed fluid systems to pierce a fluid line thereof without leaking fluid from the system or allowing contaminants to enter the system. The device includes a straddle nut having a tube embracing portion adapted to be soldered or brazed to the fluid line, and a valve body threadably engageable within the straddle nut. A piercing needle is rotatably supported within the body, and has a line-piercing portion which projects through an aperture in the nut and pierces the fluid line as the valve body is screwed into the nut. The piercing portion of the needle is rearwardly tapered to engage the marginal edge of the aperture in the straddle nut before penetration of the fluid line, thereby providing an initial seal to prevent the escape of fluid or entry of contaminants before the tube is pierced, and additionally to prevent rotation of the needle during the actual piercing of the tube. Additional sealing around the needle is accomplished as the valve body is completely engaged within the straddle nut.

    • A method and device is provided for tapping an existing primary pipeline (e.g., a water supply line) without cutting the existing primary pipeline. A secondary supply line may be installed by coupling the device to a valve of the existing pipeline. In various implementations, the device may have a single port serving as both an input (i.e., an inlet) and an output (i.e., an outlet). Among other advantages, the invention may be used to avoid costly procedures of cutting supply lines, to prevent water spillage, to integrate with existing alarm and home improvement systems, and to communicate wirelessly with utility companies for billing purposes.
