    • The invention is directed to an apparatus for steering rear wheels of a vehicle. A vehicle speed sensor detects a speed of the vehicle, and a steering angle sensor detects a steering angle of front wheels of the vehicle and provides a first steering signal. A control device is provided for receiving the first steering signal and providing a second steering signal representing a desired steering angle of rear wheels of the vehicle which is determined in response to the first steering signal. A drive device is arranged to receive the second steering signal and steer the rear wheels to reach the desired steering angle. Then, a limit mechanism is provided for reducing the range of variation of steering angle of the rear wheels steered by the drive device to a predetermined range when the vehicle speed exceeds a predetermined speed, or the steering angle of the front wheels is less than a predetermined angle. Accordingly, when the vehicle is traveling at high speed, or when the vehicle turns with a large turning radius, the steering angle of the rear wheels is prevented from being unnecessarily varied.

    • A four-wheel steering system for an automotive vehicle includes a front wheel steering mechanism operable in response to a steering effort applied thereto to steer a pair of dirigible front road wheels, a rear wheel steering mechanism arranged to steer a pair of dirigible rear road wheels in response to steerage of the front road wheels, and a control apparatus arranged to control the rear wheel steering mechanism in such a manner that the rear road wheels are retained in their neutral positions when the front road wheels are steered at an angle less than a predetermined small angle and that the rear road wheels are steered in an opposite direction relative to the front road wheels when the front road wheels are steered at a larger angle than the predetermined small angle. The control apparatus is further arranged to control the rear wheel steering mechanism in such a manner that a changing rate of the rear wheel steering angle per a unit steering angle of the front road wheels increases in accordance with an increase of the front wheel steering angle.

    • A rear wheel steer angle controlling apparatus for vehicles having steerable front and rear wheels, adapted for controlling the steer angle or rear wheels in response to the operation of the steering wheel for steering the front wheels. The speed with which the steering wheel is turned is detected and compared with a reference value which varies in accordance with changes in a physical amount related to the vehicle velocity. When the speed of operation of the steering wheel is larger than the reference value, a rear wheel steer angle is formed in the counter direction to the direction of the front wheel steer angle, so that the response to the steering input for turning the vehicle is improved. Conversely, when the speed of operation of the steering wheel is smaller than the reference value, a rear wheel steer angle is formed in the same direction as the front wheel steer angle, thus enhancing the stability of the vehicle running straight.

    • In a four-wheeled vehicle, the rear wheels are turned as well as the front wheels in response to operation of the steering wheel. The rear wheel turning angle characteristics relative to the front wheel turning angle is changed according to the vehicle speed. In the low to high vehicle speed region, the rear wheel turning angle is increased with increase of the front wheel turning angle and the increasing rate is increased as the vehicle speed increases. In the very low vehicle speed region, the rear wheels are not turned until the front wheels are turned at least by a predetermined angle, and are turned in the direction opposite to the front wheels when the front wheels are turned by an angle larger than the predetermined angle. The rear wheel turning angle in the opposite direction is changed in proportion to the front wheel turning angle.

    • The improved steering controller is of the type used to control the angular position of the rear wheels on a four-wheel-steer vehicle as a function of the angular position of the front, operator-steered wheels. The controller includes a computing section, a visual display of the alpha-numeric type and a visual indicator which provides a bar-like display having a number of individual "markers" arranged in a row. The apparent length of such bar-like display, which changes as markers are illuminated, apprises the vehicle operator of the approximate magnitude and direction of angular displacement of the rear wheels from the centered position. The alpha-numeric visual display indicates operational mode as well as "errors" used in troubleshooting diagnosis and repair. The controller also incorporates a "learn" feature whereby the threshold input power and coil operating current of the steering hydraulic valve are determined and stored in a memory section to provide more consistent valve operation and to reduce setup time.
