    • The invention relates to a plated grinding tool which is symmetrically configured around an axis of rotation. Said plated grinding tool comprises a plurality of grinding plates arranged on the periphery and/or on the faces, and comprises a support body on which said grinding plates are fixed. The plated grinding tool also comprises a device for connecting the plated grinding tool to a drive device. The support body additionally comprises a carrier ring, a rapid clamping device for connecting the plated grinding tool to a drive device, and a set made up of a plated grinding tool and a rapid clamping device.

    • An automated system for preparing weld land areas of panels to be welded to each other is disclosed. Generally, the system of the present invention includes a system for cleaning contaminants from such weld land areas. In one embodiment, the system for cleaning contaminants includes a system for blasting carbon dioxide granules or pellets against the weld land areas. In instances where the panels comprise aluminum, the system may further include a system for removing at least a first layer of aluminum oxide from the weld land areas. In one embodiment, the system for removing includes a system for moving a plurality of sheets of sand paper over the weld land areas. For purposes of moving the panels relative to the system for cleaning contaminants and/or the system for removing at least the first layer of aluminum oxide, the automated system of the present invention may further include a shuttle system for supporting and moving at least the first panel therethrough.

    • The invention is directed to an improved abrasive pad (15). In the preferred embodiment, the abrasive pad is comprised of an inner core (16) having an outer surface (19), a strip of abrasive material (18), the strip of abrasive material wrapped around the outer surface of the inner core, and a central throughbore (20) extending through the material and the inner core and adapted for engagement with a torque-producing device. The outer surface of the abrasive pad may comprise a top surface (21), a bottom surface (22), a front surface (23), a rear surface (24), a right surface (25), and a left surface (26), and the abrasive strip may be wrapped over the right surface, the bottom surface, the left surface, and the top surface to form a first layer (28) of abrasive material. The abrasive strip may be wrapped around the inner core at least twice to form at least a second layer (29) of abrasive material. The abrasive material may be sandpaper and the throughbore may be threaded (35) for engagement with a mandrel. The throughbore may further comprise a grommet (36) holding the strip of material around the inner core. The inner core may be generally rectangular and further comprise at least one chamfer surface (38).

    • Surface treating articles and methods for the manufacture of such articles are provided. The articles of the invention comprise a rotatable core; a plurality of surface treating segments, the segments having first ends adjacent the core and second ends opposite the first ends; and a cured, expanded adhesive composition bonding the surface treating segment to the core, the adhesive composition comprising (a) an organic epoxide compound having an epoxide functionality of at least 1, (b) an epoxide hardener, (c) a film-forming material, and (d) a foaming agent; wherein the expanded adhesive provides a substantially continuous bond area extending from the core into and around the first end of the segments. The method for the manufacture of the articles comprises applying the foregoing adhesive to the core, applying the surface treating segments to the core by positioning the first ends of the segments adjacent the core and in contact with the adhesive; expanding the adhesive into the first ends of the surface treating segments; and hardening the adhesive to form the surface treating article.

    • In one embodiment, a support member on an abrasive wheel has (a) an annular surface which fixedly supports (as by epoxy) a plurality of flaps in a partially overlapping relationship between successive flaps and (b) a central hole for receiving a mandrel which rotates the wheel. Each flap has on one of its surfaces abrasive particles facing outwardly from the annular surface. Each flap defines an acute angle with the annular surface and preferably extends at its opposite axial ends beyond the axial positions of support by such support surface to obtain a fixed positioning of the flaps relative to the support surface even at the axial positions beyond the axial ends of such annular surface. In a second embodiment, the flaps are disposed on the annular support surface in a tighter relationship than in the first embodiment so that each flap contacts adjacent flaps along a portion of its length. When the wheel is rotated with the flaps disposed adjacent a workpiece, the inner portions of the flaps provide an abrading action, partly because of their contact with one another, and the outer portions of the flaps provide a polishing action, partly because of their separation from one another. This polishing action is facilitated by the fact that (a) the flaps become separated from one another at their outer ends because of centrifugal action and (b) the grit on the flaps becomes progressively worn with progressive positions toward the outer ends of the flaps.

The end of the cotter pin opposite the bight may be inserted into the chuck of a drilling or turning machine to hold and rotate the tool about the axis of the stem.

    • An apparatus for sanding a work piece is provided which includes a mounting surface for abrasive strips and has an axis of rotation. Several of these strips are oriented radially with relation to the axis and laterally to themselves and at least a portion of the strips are surfaced with an abrasive material. These strips are optionally attached to mounting sleeves having a first elastic sleeve adapted to be fitted over the mounting surface. The apparatus preferably includes at least one telescopic housing. Within the housing is a drive shaft including a flexible drive shaft portion and a telescopic drive shaft portion. A motor drive system is also provided. A pivot mechanism is also provided to pivot the drive shaft and the axis of rotation of the apparatus.
