    • An apparatus for plastically deforming a work piece in the form of a sheet, comprising at least two cylindrical guide rolls rotatable in a first direction, each of said cylindrical guide rolls having an outer circumference; a bendable strip having a portion of at least one surface in communication with a portion of the outer circumference of each of the at least two guide rollers, said bendable strip being capable of motion around the at least two guide rollers in the first direction and exerting a force upon a work piece, a first cylindrical feeding roll rotatable in a second direction opposite to the first direction, said first cylindrical feeding roll having an outer circumference, a plastic deformation passage having a first surface and a second surface, at least a portion of the first surface being defined by a portion of the bendable strip, and at least a portion of the second surface being defined by the outer circumference of the first cylindrical feeding roll, wherein one or both of the bendable strip and the cylindrical feeding roll, when in motion, propel the work piece through the plastic deformation passage wherein it is plastically deformed.

    • A work roll for use in rolling apparatus for producing from a metal blank sheet articles having a deformed cross section and comprising, for example, a plate portion, and a plurality of upright walls formed on one surface of the plate portion integrally therewith and arranged as spaced apart from one another, such as flat heat exchange tube component members, heat sinks and lead frames. The work roll assures more simplified production work and provides surface finishes with higher accuracy than conventionally. The work roll comprises different kinds of disks having different diameters and arranged alternately on an axis into juxtaposed layers as secured to one another. Large disks 20A, 20B, are arranged at respective portions not forming the upright walls, and small disks 21A, 21B smaller than the large disks 20A, 20B in radius by an amount corresponding to the height of the upright walls are arranged at respective portions for forming the upright walls. Each of the disks 20A, 20B, 21A, 21B has an outer peripheral surface serving as a working surface.

    • Metal strip is made by heating a workpiece to an elevated temperature, wrapping it around a substantial arc of a first roll, positioning a second roll with respect to the first roll to provide a roll pass therewith at the exit end of the wrap, positioning a third roll with respect to the second roll to provide a second roll pass to give the desired strip thickness with the workpiece engaging a substantial arc of the second roll between the roll passes, the arc of wrap around each of the first and second rolls being less than 90.degree.. The second roll is rotated at a peripheral speed substantially greater than that of the first roll and the third roll is rotated at a peripheral speed at least as great as that of the second roll. A ferrous base hot rolled strip having a width of at least 20 inches, a maximum thickness of 0.04 inches and a length of at least 80 feet is obtainable by this method.
