    • An initiator with fuse device for an automatic self-contained fire suppressor and method are provided herein. Stovetop fires are a well-known residential and commercial hazard. The initiator with fuse device for an automatic stovetop fire suppressor has a rapid light time in the presence of flames. The time to light is consistent and reliable for the fuse described herein. Comparative tests show a shorter light time for the present fuse as compared to conventional fuses. Further, the variability in lighting times is shortened when the herein described configuration is employed. Deployment of an automatic stovetop fire suppressor can be safer than manual extinguishing means and via the initiator with fuse described herein, the time to deployment is greatly improved. Manufacturing of the initiator with fuse is readily adapted to existing processes.

    • Fire protection system and methods for a cooking appliance located in a hazard zone includes a firefighting supply and one or more nozzles coupled to the supply for generating a spray pattern to address a fire in the hazard zone. The system includes a preferred nozzle location zone to locate the nozzle outlet at a nozzle height from the hazard zone. The nozzle location zone has a first linear edge and a second linear edge spaced from the first linear edge with each of the first and second linear edges being parallel to the hazard zone. The second linear edge defines a minimum nozzle height and the first linear edge defines a maximum nozzle height. The maximum nozzle height ranges from sixty inches (60 in.) to sixty-eight inches (68 in.) from the hazard.

    • A container holding a fire suppressing powder has a top, a cylindrical sidewall and a bottom with a hole, the bottom having a score line defining a segment. An explosive material housing containing an explosive material is mounted to a head of a mounting member. The mounting member has a lower portion smaller in cross-sectional dimension than the head, depending downward from the head and extending through the hole in the bottom. A retainer is secured around the lower portion of the mounting member below the bottom to secure the mounting member to the bottom. A fuse extends through the hole in the bottom, a passage in the mounting member, and into the explosive material housing. A plate is mounted within the container a selected distance below the top, the plate being movable a short distance toward and away from the top in response to ignition of the explosive material.

    • Fire protection mist nozzles for industrial oil cookers, oil cookers with fire protection systems, and method of oil cooker fire protection are provided. The mist nozzles operate at pressures between 170 and 250 psi, and provide a unique distribution pattern that allows for variable installations for protection in certain operative environments including oil cookers with various hood configurations. The fire protection nozzles includes a base defining an inlet and an outlet along an axis. The base includes an orifice having an inlet diameter and an outlet diameter. The outlet diameter is preferably greater than the inlet diameter; and the orifice defines a K-factor of less than 1.0 gpm/psi½. The nozzle includes a diffuser aligned with the orifice. The diffuser has a preferably substantially domed portion with a maximum diameter that is less than the summation of the inlet diameter and the outlet diameter of the orifice.

    • An appliance having the capability to assist in retarding a fire external to the appliance. One or more nozzle may be incorporated within the appliance or provided externally to provide a fluid mist. The main appliance pump or a separate pump may provide pressurised fluid to the one or more nozzles or a pressurised supply to the appliance may be used directly. A control circuit for controlling one or more pumps and or valves may be incorporated in the main appliance control circuitry or provided separately. One or more fire detection sensors may be provided within or external to the appliance and may communicate with the control circuit via a wireless signal, over power lines, via a sound signal or over communication lines. Where a nozzle is incorporated into an appliance it may be located on a surface of an appliance that is exposed when the appliance is installed. A pop-out nozzle may be provided behind a burst panel. The appliance may also include an internal fire suppressing system. The appliance may be a cleaning appliance (such as a washing machine, dishwasher etc. with an internal pump), a waste disposer, a coffee maker, a plumbed fridge, an ice maker, a boiler or like appliance. Where the appliance is a waste disposer a pump may be included driven by the waste disposer motor. A popup nozzle may be included in the waste disposer that extends out of the waste disposer when pressurised fluid is provided thereto. A control circuit of the waste disposer may control the supply of fluid to the waste disposer during operation of the waste disposer. A nozzle located remote from the waste disposer may also be plumbed to the pump of the waste disposer.

    • Stovetop fires are among the more prevalent of resident fire hazards and smoke detectors are among the most prevalent and economical forms of residential fire alarms. Automatic stovetop fire extinguishers can prevent property damage and even personal injury; however, these stovetop fire extinguishers may also limit smoke emissions and the subsequent detection of smoke. While an initial fire may be efficiently subdued by an automatic stovetop fire extinguisher, it is often desirable to alert present and future occupants of a fire hazardous condition. A sound based fire alarm system and method are described herein, which detects a sound burst emitted upon deployment of an automatic stovetop fire extinguisher and triggers a continuous fire alarm to alert occupants of a potentially fire hazardous condition. Alarm signals can be audible, visual, or both. The system may be a stand alone system and use battery power for affordability and ease of installation. The method described herein enables the ready and automatic extinguishment of a stovetop fire, while alerting those in the surrounding area or those in adjacent dwellings of a fire situation.
