    • A method and apparatus for preparation of a selected area of skin to facilitate drug absorption comprises removal of the outermost layers of the skin by gentle abrasion or other means, measuring the change in electrical resistance or impedance of the skin as the outermost layers of the skin are removed, and stopping skin removal when a predetermined optimum skin resistance or impedance is achieved to facilitate drug absorption. The preferred electrical resistance or impedance meter is in contact with the skin under consideration by two separate but adjacent conductive poles and is purpose calibrated to signal when the skin resistance or impedance level is such that rapid absorption of a drug will occur.

    • An electrode device for establishing an electrical connection between electromedical apparatus and the skin of the human anatomy comprising a composite electrode body for self-adhering engagement with a substantial surface area of the skin to establish the electrical connection throughout substantially the entire engaged area of the skin without the use of conductive pastes, gels or other liquids, such as solvents or the like, the composite electrode body being porous and hypoallergenic and including a carrier layer and a thin flexible layer of pressure sensitive adhesive material having fine electrically conductive particles dispersed throughout providing a tacky skin-engaging surface the particles being provided in an amount sufficient to effect the electrical connection with the engaged area of the skin through the layer by particle to particle contact while permitting the skin-engaging surface of the layer to remain tacky prior to skin engagement. A removable sheet having a release surface engaging the tacky skin-engaging surface of the layer is operable to be separated therefrom prior to application without substantially reducing the tackiness thereof.

    • Method and apparatus for providing an improved electrical connection between an electrode placed on the surface of the body and the underlying tissue. The electrode, including an absorbent pad saturated with a conductive material, is adhesively affixed to the body surface. The elongated fibers of a brush are brought into contact with the absorbent pad and, with an appropriate amount of force applied to the brush, the fibers micro-puncture the body surface, forcing the conductive material into microchannels beneath the body surface fomed or enlarged by the fibers and into contact with the underlying tissue.

    • An electrode for obtaining a biopotential signal from the skin of a subject. The electrode comprises an adhesive element, an electrode body, an electrically conductive electrode pad, a sponge element, soaked with conductive gel, and means for skin abrasion. The means for skin abrasion comprises abrasion elements forming an integrated structure with the electrode pad, the abrasion elements being so dimensioned that the sponge element prevents the abrasion elements from touching the skin when biopotential signals are measured and enables mechanical contact between the skin and the abrasion elements when the electrode pad is pushed towards the skin. The electrode body is made flexible to enable intentional movement of the electrode pad relative to the adhesive element.
