    • A unitary electrode mounting and packaging system for roughening the skin of a patient and applying an electrocardiogram (ECG) monitoring electrode to the skin in a single step. A sheet of a thin plastic material is folded over itself to form a U-shaped carrier having an upper panel connected to a lower panel by the fold. The upper panel supports an electrode and an amount of an electrically conductive gel in a pocket that is covered by the electrode. The lower panel includes an abrasive or roughened material on the bottom surface of the lower panel opposite the electrode. To place the electrode on the skin, the carrier is positioned against the skin of a patient such that the roughened material contacts the skin and pressure is applied downwardly on the electrode. A tab connected to the lower panel then is grasped and pulled by an individual such that the roughened material abrades the skin beneath the carrier to clear the portion of the skin located beneath the electrode. Continued pulling of the tab then deposits the electrically conductive gel and the electrode on the portion of the skin cleared by the roughened material on the lower panel.

    • A skin preparatory composition for use in conjunction with electrocardiograph and electroencephalograph monitoring electrodes containing karaya gum in an amount sufficient to adhere the electrodes to the skin, sodium citrate in an amount which imparts sufficient electrolytic properties to the composition, an abrasive in an amount effective to reduce the impedance of the skin to a satisfactory level when the composition is applied thereto, and a vehicle for these constituents. The karaya gum effectively removes any perspiration, dirt, natural body oils, moisturing oils and lotions, and the attendant electrical interference from the skin. A wetting agent in an amount sufficient to aid in solubilizing the karaya gum in the vehicle and a preservative in an amount sufficient to extend the useful life of the composition may also be incorporated in the composition.

    • A method and device for preparing the skin of a patient to ensure good electrical contact between a medical electrode and the patient's skin. The electrode or the tips of the preparation device includes an abrasive pad impregnated with an electrolyte for providing good electrical contact with the patient's skin. When an electrode is used, the pad is centrally mounted and is rotated in a housing having an adhesive annular rim which is secured to the skin. The pad is rotatably driven by the preparation device which continuously measures the impedance between the pad of the electrode and a reference electrode, which is also secured to the skin. A motor in the preparation device rotates the pad to abrade the skin responsive to actuation of a switch. Rotation of the pad terminates within a predetermined period or when the impedance between the pad and reference electrode falls to a predetermined value, whichever occurs first. The impedance between the electrode being applied and the reference electrode is measured by producing an alternating current having a constant magnitude between the electrodes, rectifying the voltage across the electrodes, which is proportional to the impedance therebetween and the voltage, to an adjustable reference voltage. When the rectified voltage drops to the reference voltage a manually actuated timer powering the motor is reset if the timer has not already been reset after the predetermined period.

The dry physiological recording electrode comprising a substrate having an upper and a lower surface, and at least one penetrator(s) protruding from the upper surface of the substrate. The penetrator(s) is capable of piercing through the stratum corneum or outer layer of the skin, and transmitting an electric potential from the lower layers of the epidermis through the penetrator(s) which can be measured, or detecting agents from the lower layers of the epidmermis primarily the stratum germinativum layer. At least one epidermis stop may be provided resulting in the formation of detritus troughs interposed between adjacent penetrator(s) and epidermis stops.
