    • A fastener driving tool capable of locating a preformed hole in a first workpiece, aligning the drive track of the tool with the hole, and thereafter driving a fastener, such as a nail, through the hole and into a second workpiece to attach the first workpiece to the second workpiece. The tool has a magazine comprising an outer portion affixed to the tool and its drive track containing guide body, and an inner portion containing a strip of nails and pivoted at its rearward end to the rearward end of the outer magazine portion. The inner magazine portion is pivotable within the outer magazine portion between a first position wherein the forwardmost nail of the strip extends well beyond the nose of the guide body serving as a probe to locate and enter the workpiece hole, and a second position wherein the forwardmost nail of the strip is still engaged in the workpiece hole and is properly aligned in the drive track to be driven by the tool driver through the first workpiece hole and into the second workpiece. The inner magazine is operatively connected to safety trip which is shiftable between a first, disabling position when the inner magazine portion is in its first position and a second enabling position allowing the tool to be actuated when the inner magazine is in its second position. The inner magazine portion and the safety trip are biased to their first positions.

    • Improvements in the guide body and nail feed mechanism of a nail driving tool, using wire collated nails, to eliminate the formation of loose pieces of collating wire and the trapping thereof under the heads of driven nails to form flags. The tool has a driver, a magazine containing a coil of nails joined together in spaced relationship by collating wires welded to each nail, a guide body providing a drive track for the driver and the nails, and a feed pawl which advances and retracts in guideways in the guide body and has fingers engaging nails of the coil to locate the forwardmost nail thereof in the drive track. As the forwardmost nail of the coil is driven into a workpiece the collating wires break near the forwardmost nail leaving forwardly extending wire segments on the next succeeding nail. The drive track is provided with windows positioned to receive the wire segments of the forwardmost nail and bend them upwardly along the nail shank as the nail is driven. The feed pawl is provided with wide feed fingers to support the wire segments of the second nail of the coil, tending to assure breakage of the wires near the forwardmost nail and orienting the segments for receipt in the drive track windows. The pawl and the drive track are configured to prevent breakage or nicking of the segments of the second nail by the head of the forwardmost nail. The nails of the coil are spaced to assure wire segments of sufficient length.

    • A fastener driving tool powered by internal combustion of an air/fuel mixture. The tool body contains connected upper and lower coaxial cylinders. The upper cylinder is provided with a piston assembly and is connected by a one-way valve to a combustion air chamber. The lower cylinder contains a piston/driver assembly and is surrounded by and connected to a return air chamber. The upper cylinder piston assembly and the lower cylinder piston/driver assembly, when in their normal unactuated positions, define therebetween a combustion chamber provided with an ignition device. A positive trigger-actuated cam system, upon actuation of the trigger, is configured to open a fuel valve to introduce a measured amount of gaseous fuel from a source thereof into the combustion chamber; to thereafter open an air valve to introduce a measured quantity of air from the combustion air chamber into the combustion chamber; to next actuate the ignition device to combust the aire fuel mixture causing the lower cylinder piston/driver assembly to drive a fastener and to fill the return air chamber with air under pressure in the upper cylinder piston assembly to replenish air under pressure in the combustion air chamber; and finally to actuate a control valve operating an exhaust valve eliminating products of combustion enabling the upper cylinder piston assembly to return to its normal position and air from the return air chamber to return the lower cylinder piston/driver assembly to its normal position.

    • An electronic control system for a pneumatic fastener driving tool of the type having a body containing a cylinder with a piston mounting a driver, a firing valve above and normally closing the upper end of the cylinder, and a space or volume above the firing valve. The volume above the firing valve is normally connected to a source of air under pressure to maintain the firing valve closed. When this volume is connected to exhaust the firing valve opens allowing air under pressure within the cylinder above the piston to cycle the tool. The electronic control system comprises a solenoid actuated valve which, when actuated, connects the volume above the firing valve to exhaust to cycle the tool, a source of electrical current and a control circuit. The control circuit establishes a desired mode of operation for the tool and has inputs from at least a manual trigger and a safety and interprets the inputs including their presence or absence and their sequence. When the inputs satisfy the desired mode of operation, the control circuit will generate an output signal to the valve solenoid and the tool will cycle.

    • A backup washer for the cylindrical scalpel of an intraluminal surgical stapling instrument of the type used to join tubular body organs. The washer comprises an annular member of semi-rigid material having an annular groove formed therein extending from the distal surface of the washer inwardly toward the proximal surface of the washer facing the scalpel. As a result, the washer comprises two spaced annular walls joined at their proximal ends by a thin web providing a backup surface for the scalpel. When the scalpel is advanced by the surgical stapling instrument it will abut and cut through the thin web of the backup washer. When the scalpel cuts through the backup washer web the force required to further advance the scalpel abruptly and noticeably diminishes giving the surgeon clear tactile indication that the surgical staples have been implanted and clinched in the tissue of the tubular body organs being joined and that the scalpel has completely severed the excess tissue.
