A monostable trigger stage of the switch mechanism is connected to a DC voltage which is proportional to the voltage of the alternating current source, and its resistor which is connected with the capacitive coupling of the trigger stage transistors and determines the reset time of the trigger stage, is connected to a constant DC voltage. The mechanism includes a voltage divider, the division ratio of which is variable by means of a frequency recognition circuit.

    • A photographic camera having a lens opening and a finder opening in the housing or casing of the camera, is provided with a cover plate or blind plate to close these openings when pictures are not being taken, to protect the picture taking lens and the finder lens from possible damage and to prevent entrance of dust or foreign matter into the housing. A manually operable slider controls the movement of the cover plate between its closed and open positions and also moves the film transport means or feeding mechanism, to advance the film through the space of one picture area or "frame." As the amount of film wound on the take-up spool increases so that the diameter of such film increases, a less amount of rotation of the take-up spool is needed in order to advance the film through the space of one picture, and therefore a less amount of movement of the operating slider is needed, and this lesser movement might not be sufficient to shift the cover plate all the way from its closed position to its open position, if the cover plate were directly coupled to the slider. Therefore, the cover plate is coupled to the slider by a lost motion connection, and after the slider has caused some initial movement of the cover plate, an auxiliary drive moves the cover plate the remainder of the distance to its fully open position even though movement of the slider may have stopped.

    • A diaphragm shutter combining the functions of the diaphragm and a shutter. A pair of slides move relative to each other to open the exposure aperture to start the exposure. A pair of pivoted blades then swing relative to each other to close the exposure aperture to terminate the exposure. A rotating cam controls the speed at which the slides move in an opening direction, in such manner that the opening movement starts relatively slowly and then progresses faster. This enables the total exposure time to be somewhat increased for a given exposure value or quantity of light falling on the film, as compared with the shorter total exposure time needed for the same quantity of light on the film, if the opening slides move at a uniformly high speed. The longer exposure time, for a given exposure value, results in more accurate operation of the shutter.

    • A photographic diaphragm, the aperture of which may be set either manually or automatically. A stationary aperture scale is graduated in the usual conventional f numerals plus the letter ''''A'''' at one end of the scale. A manually rotatable ring adjacent the scale carries an index mark which can be set opposite any graduation of the scale. A diaphragm drive ring which is mounted within the housing and not manually accessible in motor driven and carries a pointer movable along the same graduated aperture scale. When the manually settable ring is turned to move its index mark away from the A graduation signifying automatic setting, to any one of the numerically graduated aperture positions, a spring pressed mask obscures the pointer on the motor driven ring, so that the operator will not be confused by this pointer, and at the same time the movement of the manual ring away from the A position closes a switch which causes the motor driven ring to be driven to a position determined by an abutment stop on the manual ring. When the manual ring is turned to bring its index mark opposite the A position to indicate automatic operation, the mask is moved to a non-obscuring position so that the pointer on the motor driven ring can now be seen in relation to the aperture scale, and the switch is opened so that the driving motor no longer biases the motor driven ring toward the abutment on the manual ring, but merely moves the motor driven ring to the proper position for automatically setting the diaphragm aperture according to prevailing light conditions.

    • Electronic flash apparatus for photographic purposes, in which the duration of the flash is automatically regulated in accordance with the quantity of light reflected from the subject being photographed. The discharge of the flash tube is controlled by a thyristor in series with the flash tube. The circuit is so arranged that the voltage drop occurring in the discharge section of the flash tube when the tube is ignited, causes the thyristor to become conductive, so that the current from the usual storage capacitor can flow through the flash tube and through the thyristor in series with it, to provide the desired flash. The flash is terminated, when a measuring and integrating device receives sufficient light reflected from the subject being photographed, by a surge of commutating or counter current through the flash tube and its series thyristor, this surge being produced in part by an impedance or choke and an associated capacitor and second thyristor, the control grid or gate of the second thyristor being connected to the measuring and integrating device.

    • Electronic flash apparatus for photographic purposes, wherein a flash tube is discharged to produce the desired light, and the discharge is terminated when sufficient light has been produced. The determination of when to terminate the discharge is accomplished by integrating the light reflected from the subject being photographed. In order to avoid the over-exposure which frequently occurs when apparatus of this general type is used for taking photographs at short distances, there is an impedance incorporated in the discharge circuit in front of the flash tube, and a commutating capacitor is connected to an intermediate tap in this impedance, and to an electronic switch, the commutating capacitor and switch being in parallel with the flash tube and a thyristor which is in series with the flash tube. A resistor bypasses the commutating capacitor. A connection from the junction between the commutating capacitor and the electronic switch goes through a break-down diode and another capacitor to the junction between the flash tube and its thyristor.
