摘要： To achieve a segmented-law analogue to digital signal conversion, a capacitor is charged by a constant current which changes as the states of the three most significant digits of a binary counter, counting pulses supplied by an oscillator, change. Counting ceases and the count is read out when the capacitor voltage reaches the sampled analogue signal voltage. The constant current is derived from a constant current generator and either three current dividers or three or more further constant current generators which are switched in to or out of circuit as the count changes.

摘要： A pulse code modulated telephony transmission arrangement provides a facility which enables an operator to ''''tee'''' across an established connection between two subscribers without breaking the connection and without reducing the quality and audibility of the connection. The telephony transmission data from the subscribers and operator is of nonlinearly coded digital form and each is independently converted to linear coded digital signals which are then additionally mixed as required and thereafter converted back to the original nonlinearly coded digital form to permit the operator to speak to the subscribers, or to monitor the conversation. The digital mixing ensures both that no clicks will be heard by the subscribers, and that no reduction of signal level is produced when a ''''tee'''' connection is made.

The machine consists of a pot suitable for holding liquid at a temperature above the melting point of solder. A piston is fitted in the pot, and there is a channel passing through the piston. When the piston is depressed the hot liquid held in the pot rises up through the channel. The component to be soldered or unsoldered is positioned so that the surface of the hot displaced liquid comes in contact with the joints to be soldered or unsoldered.
