    • An automatic exposure apparatus for printing plates and a method for exposing printing plates, which can prevent a defective image such as an unfocused image from being formed when an image is recorded onto the printing plate is provided. Suction holes are formed at a surface plate 110 of an automatic exposure apparatus 100 for printing plates, and a vacuum pump 306 communicates with the suction holes. A solenoid valve 308 is provided at a communicating path 304 between the suction holes and the vacuum pump 306, and a chamber 310 is provided at the communicating path 304 between the solenoid valve 308 and the vacuum pump 306. The solenoid valve 308 is closed and the vacuum pump 306 is operated in a state in which a photopolymer plate 102 is disposed on a top surface of the surface plate 110, and the solenoid valve 308 is opened completely in an instant in a state in which a pressure of a decompressed interior of the chamber 310 is a predetermined value or lower, such that the decompressed interior can suck air all at once from the suction holes with a strong suction force. Accordingly, a curled photopolymer plate 102 can be brought in complete contact with the top surface of the surface plate 110, and thus, a defective image such as an unfocused image is prevented when an image is recorded.

    • A pair of optical sensors are disposed above photopolymer plates and interleaf papers, which are alternately stacked with one another. These optical sensors basically have the same structure. However, the optical sensor is disposed so as to be inclined to an optical axis of reflected light, and therefore, a detection level of the optical sensor substantially becomes low. Accordingly, although the optical sensors each react to the reflected light from the photopolymer plate, the optical sensor does not react to the reflected light from the interleaf paper. As a result, it is determined whether the uppermost layer of the stack is the photopolymer plate or the interleaf paper. In a discriminating device of the present invention, general purpose optical sensors adapted to react to light having such a fixed intensity or greater, are used.

    • A suction transport device capable of reducing manufacturing cost due to reduction of the number of suction mechanisms by which one of photopolymer plates accommodated in a magazine is taken out is attained. Also separability when the printing plate is taken out is improved, thus improving reliability of the suction transport device. Since, among suckers and suction fans, those located at positions corresponding to the widthwise direction ends of the printing plates are movable in the widthwise direction, and separating plates are movable in the same direction. When one of the printing plates of a different size is to be taken out, the leading end corner portions of the printing plate can always be curved at a fixed curvature, and separability is improved. Further, there is no need to increase the number of suckers thus decreasing cost.

    • A printing plate discharging method and a printing plate discharging device can quickly and reliably discharge a printing plate from a surface plate, which printing plate has been placed in a state wherein one end portion of the printing plate projects from the surface plate, without making an exposed face of the printing plate dirty or scratched. At a discharging mechanism section of an automatic exposure device, a temporary support arm corresponds with the one end portion of the printing plate, which end portion projects from on the surface plate. The temporary support arm is raised higher than the surface plate by a moving stage moving and a roller thereby abutting against a projecting portion of the temporary support arm. Thus, the temporary support arm lifts up the one end portion of the printing plate. In this state, a plate discharging hook engages the one end portion of the printing plate (a lifted portion) and pushes the printing plate toward another end portion of the surface plate. Thus, the printing plate can be discharged from the surface plate.
